Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - It was a highly-anticipated pitching matchup and for a few innings it lived up to its billing. Robbie Erlin had another strong start and the Pelicans pecked away at Drew Pomeranz as Myrtle Beach finished a three-game sweep of the Kinston Indians with a 4-2 win. Erlin had another great outing as he went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits. The lefty struck out seven and walked one as he lowered his ERA to 2.14. Jared Prince had his first three-hit game of the season to lead an offense that racked up ten hits. Myrtle Beach got on the board in the second off Pomeranz when after Chris McGuiness singled and Vinny DiFazio was hit by a pitch, Prince flared a single into shallow right to plate the first run of the game. In the next inning back-to-back singles by Leury Garcia and Ryan Strausborger and a Mike Olt walk loaded the bases. A bloop single from McGuiness brought in Garcia to make it 2-0.

Kinston scored their first run of the series in the fourth of Erlin after a Bo Greenwell double and an Adam Abraham single. It was the first time the southpaw had allowed back-to-back hits since April 20 against Winston-Salem, a span of over 24 innings. Justin Toole led off the fifth with a triple, but Erlin buckled down, inducing a foul out, a strikeout and a groundout to strand the runner.

The Birds knocked Pomeranz (1-1) out in the bottom of the fifth after Ryan Strausborger worked a one-out walk. Toru Murata came on in relief and Strauborger stole second, then moved to third as catcher Doug Pickens' throw sailed into center. Olt drove him home with a single up the middle to get the run back for Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans tacked on one more in the sixth off Murata when Garcia singled in Prince to make it a 4-1 game. Prince is now 12-for-26 (.462) over his last nine games.

Erlin (3-1) gave way to the bullpen in the seventh and Wilfredo Boscan tuned up for his move to the rotation on Sunday with a scoreless inning, but the K-Tribe scored a run off Kasey Kiker in the eighth on a Tyler Holt single to cut the lead to 4-2. Trevor Hurley recorded the final out of the eighth then had a 1-2-3 ninth, ending the night with two strikeouts for his third save.

The Pelicans got their first series sweep since taking three straight from Winston-Salem from April 18-20. In the three games, Pelicans pitchers surrendered only two runs on ten hits to the K-Tribe. Thursday's win was the Birds' fourth in a row and it moved Myrtle Beach to 21-12, still one game back of Salem in the Carolina League Southern Division.

The Indians will go home to start a weekend set against Frederick while the Pelicans will host three games against the Lynchburg Hillcats. It marks Lynchburg's first visit to Myrtle Beach since the Atlanta Braves changed farm clubs from the Pelicans to the Hillcats. Barret Loux goes for the Pelicans against highly-touted Hillcats righty Arodys Vizcaino and first pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
