Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- Barrett Kleinknecht and Geraldo Rodriguez hit their first home runs for the Hillcats, but it wasn't enough to propel Lynchburg to victory, as they lost 5-4 to the Frederick Keys Thursday night.
The Keys jumped out in front early in the game. After Lynchburg starter Cory Rasmus walked the leadoff batter in the first inning, Steve Bumbry, Buck Britton hit a home run to right field to give the Keys the early 2-0 lead.
Britton struck again in the second inning. He came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, and laced a double to right field that cleared the bases to raise his RBI total to five on the night.
Pitchers on both sides settled down for the next few innings. Keys starter Rick Zagone held the Hillcats to just one hit in six innings pitched and, after the first two innings, Rasmus and the bullpen held the Keys scoreless.
In the seventh inning, Barrett Kleinknecht came up to the plate with a runner on first and two outs. He hit a home run over the left-center field wall to break the shutout, his first home run as a Hillcat. He had been called up from low-A Rome on May 10.
Frederick's Sean Gleason came into the game in the ninth inning, trying to pick up his second save in as many nights. He walked the leadoff man in the inning, Joey Terdoslavich. The next batter, Geraldo Rodriguez, who also joined the team on May 10, crushed a two-run home run to left field to cut the lead to 5-4. Gleason settled down after the home run, and despite allowing a single to Kleinknecht, escaped the inning to earn his eighth save of the year.
Zagone got the win to move to 1-0 in a Frederick uniform, while Rasmus fell to 0-4. Lynchburg is now 11-20 on the season, and the Keys moved to 18-14.
The Hillcats head out on the road Friday, starting a seven game, two city, road trip. They will play Myrtle Beach Friday night with a 7:05 pm first pitch. Arodys Vizcaino (1-2) is scheduled to take the mound for the Hillcats while Barrett Loux (2-2) will pitch for Myrtle Beach.
The Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 6:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
