Eriks Zohovs Departs Phantoms for Pro Hockey

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms have announced that forward Eriks Zohovs will not be returning to the team after the USHL holiday break and has elected to join HC Kunlan Red Star, based in China and part of the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League).

The 6'0 185 lbs. centerman from Latvia was in his first season with the Phantoms after being added to the team in September following a strong season the previous year in the North American Junior Hockey League (NAHL) with the Shreveport Mudbugs.

Eriks Zohovs had played ten games with the Phantoms this season and had a 1 goal -2 assists - 3 points line in the USHL.

"Eriks decided that he would like to start a new chapter in his hockey career after spending the last three seasons playing junior hockey in the United States, " stated Phantoms' General Manager Jason Koehler. "While the timing is not ideal from our team's standpoint, we know that we as a team and league look to develop our players for various college and professional hockey opportunities and in this case - Eriks had a chance to make a move and join the KHL, one of the top professional hockey leagues in the world. We wish him all the best moving forward."

HC Kunlan Red Star is part of the KHL and plays out of Beijing, China. The KHL is considered the second best professional league behind only the NHL and features twenty seven clubs in various countries like Belarus, China, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Russia, and Slovakia.
