To put a little perspective on the first homestand of the 2021 season, there was no "last half of the ninth inning" until game five of the series (meaning the RockHounds had won the first four games). Saturday night, however, San Antonio said, "enough is enough."
The Missions defeated the 'Hounds, 6-2, for their first win in the six-game that concludes Sunday afternoon at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
San Diego Padres prospect Reiss Knehr tossed five shutout innings and the Missions gave him an early 3-0 lead to work with, scoring three runs in the second, capped by Jack Suwinski's two-run single.
San Antonio stretched the advantage to 6-0 with another three-run inning, this time in the sixth, with Jose Azocar's two-run single providing the key hit.
The RockHounds got on the board in the last of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs against reliever Pedro Avila, but could only score twice, with each run coming on a fielder's choice.
The Missions broke a four-game slide, snapping the RockHounds' four-game win streak in the process. Despite the defeat, the 'Hounds have won 6-of-their-last-8 games entering Sunday's series (and homestand) finale.
Kibbles & Bits
Jonah Bride went 1-for-2 and reached base in 3-of-4 trips to the plate. He ranks first or second in the Double-A Central in six major offensive categories, including on-base percentage (a tremendous .583), which he leads by nearly 50 percentage points.
