OREM, UT, April 6, 2011 - Curtis Stinson scored 29 points and handed out 9 assists as the Iowa Energy won game 1 of their playoff series against the Utah Flash 103-96 Wednesday night.
Iowa bolted out to a 57-45 halftime lead as forward Michael Haynes (12 points) and center Scott Vandermeer (9 points) led the way. Utah responded early in the 3rd quarter as Flash guard Andre Ingram hit two quick 3-pointers as part of an 8-2 Utah run to cut the lead in half. After an Energy bucket by Stefhon Hannah, Utah's Kevin Kruger hit two 3-pointers of his own to narrow Iowa's lead to 61-59. The two teams traded buckets for several minutes before an Orien Greene 3-pointer with only 0:36 remaining in the quarter gave Utah a 73-72 lead.
Iowa reserve Kenny Taylor hit a 3-pointer to give Iowa the lead back at 75-73 just seconds into the 4th quarter. After a Utah free throw, Iowa scored seven straight points, including rebound basket and foul by Stanley Robinson to but the lead to eight.
With under four minutes to play, Utah cut the lead to four on a basket by Ingram. After forcing an Energy miss, Utah had a chance to cut into the lead further, but Ingram's 3-pointer was off and Energy guard Shy Ely found Robinson open for a dunk to extend the Iowa advantage.
Utah cut the lead to four as time was winding down, but Iowa used three offensive rebounds and solid free throw shooting late to put the game away.
Haynes finished with 14 points while Marqus Blakely had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Utah was led by Ingram's 22 point effort while reserve center Nkem Ojougboh had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks.
The Energy held Utah to just 38.8% shooting on the night while blocking 10 Flash shots.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be Monday in Des Moines at 7pm. Tickets are available for Monday's playoff game by visiting www.IowaNBA.com, calling 515-564-8550 or at the arena box office.
