Eugene Emeralds News Release

Eugene, OR - Just days before the kick-off of the 2010 season, the San Diego Padres have officially announced an initial roster of 31 players to make up the 2010 Eugene Emeralds-including six returning players.

The roster consists of 15 pitchers, four catchers, seven infielders and five outfielders-with 16 of the 31 joining the team from Extended Spring Training in Peoria, Arizona. The team will be led by veteran manager, Greg Riddoch, pitching coach Tom Bradley and hitting coach Shawn Wooten.

The pitching staff will be anchored by some familiar faces as well as some new standouts. Right-hander, Keyvius Sampson, the Padres 2009 fourth-round pick, who started in the very last game at Civic Stadium, will be joined by other right-handers Mauricio Tabachnik and Matt Jackson-who both spent part of 2009 in Eugene. Newcomers to keep an eye on include right-handers Adys Portillo and Matt Lollis as well as local prospect RHP Matt Irsfeld out of Churchill HS.

Chris Tremblay returns from the 2009 squad to this year's middle-infield while Emmanuel Quiles returns for his third season behind the plate for Eugene. Ty Wright is also returning from the 2009 team to patrol the outfield for the Ems in 2010.

A couple of quick signees from the 2010 draft will also start the year in Eugene, including Padres 2010 second-round pick Jedd Gyorko out of West Virginia and fourth-round pick Chris Bisson out of Kentucky, both infielders. Fourteen other 2010 draftees will suit up as Emeralds to start their professional careers.

The Emeralds will host Media Day this afternoon, with media batting practice starting at 1:00 pm. The team finishes out Mini-Camp with afternoon workouts Wednesday and Thursday at PK Park. The Ems open the season Friday, June 18th against the Vancouver Canadians in their first game at PK Park. Action begins at 7:05 pm, and will be broadcast live on 95.3 FM "The Score" with Chris Fisher.
