Saturday, July 6, 2002 - Bicentennial Park, Allentown, Penn.
Elmira struck early with 3 runs in the opening inning and cruised to a 7-3 victory Saturday night at Bicentennial Park in Allentown, Penn. The Pioneers will still be eliminated from the first half race if New Jersey defeats Berkshire Saturday night.
The Pioneers have taken the first two games of the series and have won 4 of their last 5.
Justin Stine (2-4) improved to 2-0 against the Ambassadors this season. Stine nearly threw a no-hitter against Allentown on June 19 at Dunn Field and stayed pretty strong against the Am's in his encore appearance. In this game he was not quite as dominating but still threw well lasting 7ip allowing only 5 hits and 2 earned runs with 1 walk and 5 K's.
Pedro Quero had 3 hits, including a solo HR to RF, and 3 rbi's to lead the attack . Ron Bush had a 2 hits as well and as multi-hits in 5 of his last 6 games with 13 total hits during the stretch.
Rookie Bake Leonards (0-4) was pinned with the loss for Allentown allowing 8 hits, 6 runs, 4er in 5ip.
Allentown is 0-2 under new manager Ed Ott and the Pioneers are 5-1 against the Ambassadors this year. The ambassadors have dropped 5 straight as well as 16 of their last 17. They have the worst record in the circuit at 12-29.
The series finale is Sunday evening at 5:05 with LH Sean Brummett (5-1) going up against LH Silvio Censale (0-1). If the Pioneers win it will be their 3rd series sweep of the season. Elmira has not swept a series since taking 3 straight from Berkshire June 3-5 at Dunn Field. Elmira returns to Dunn Field for a 6-game homestand beginning Monday evening at 7:05 with the first of a 3-game series vs. Albany.
SCORING SUMMARY - Elmira scored 3 runs in the 1st inning. Run Bush beats out an infield single. Rafael Alvarez draws a walk. Norm Hutchins singles to right-center scoring Bush giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Hutchins was ableto advance to 2nd when the Ambassadors threw to 3rd base trying to gun down Alvarez. Pedro Quero drills a 2-run single up the middle scoring both runners giving Elmira a 3-0 lead.
Allentown got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Schuyler Doakes beat out a bunt single and was sacrificed to 2nd. He stole 3rd and scored on a single to right by Stephen Larkin making it 3-1.
Elmira got it back in the to p of the 4th when Brian Jones reached on a dropped pop-up by 3B Gustavo Escobar. Osmani Garcia and Brandon Pernell singled to load the bases. With 2 outs Rod Smith drew a bases-loaded walk forcing in the run giving the Pioneers a 4-1 advantage.
The Pioneers scored twice in the 5th inning sending 8 batters to the plate. Alvarez started the frame with a single up the middle. Quero singled with 1 out. Brian Jones hit a grounder that got through the middle infielders on miscommunication. SS Jay Hood was charged with an error and Alvarez scored as the ball rolled into CF. Brandon Pernell singled to right driving in Quero from 3rd base giving the Pioneers a 6-1 lead.
Keith Maxwell hit a solo HR to right-center with 1-out in the 7th closing the margin to 6-2.
Pedro Quero hit a Hrin the top of the 9th off reliever Chris Zallie. Quero's 6th of the season was a towering shot over the score-board in right-center.
Against Phoenixville, Penn. native Chris Brown in the bottom of the 9th, Josh Tehonica doubled to right-center and with 2 outs scored on a singled to left by Gustavo Escobar and an error by LF Brandon Pernell mishandling the ball.
