Elmira Pioneers News Release

For the 2nd time in less than a week the Pioneers are able to say, "The wait was worth it." Elmira waited out a 1:54 rain delay and came from behind in the top of the 8th inning for a 3-2 comeback win at the Adirondack Lumberjacks on a wet Thursday night at east field. Sean Brummet was once again the pitcher showing off his stuff in the late-night hours. Brummet fired 8 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned to improve to 5-1. Last Saturday, he waited out a 1:40 rain delay and retired 20 batters in a row in a magnificent performance.

A steady rain held up the start of the game for almost 2 hours. Once the game began, light rain continued at the field for the first 3 innings before backing off for the rest of the game. Rod Smith reached on an error and stole2nd and 3rd in opening inning. Pedro Quero singled him home to give the Pioneers a 1-0 early lead. Smith had 3 sb's on the night and is 2nd in the league with 17.

Adirondack tied the score in teh 4th with Juan Lebron reaching on an infield single and eventually scoring from 3rd on a groundout. In the 6th, errors by 3B Osmani Garcia and new SS Rolano Bello led to an unearned run and gave the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead.

Elmira left runners stranded at 2nd and 3rd in the 7th inning but regrouped in the 8th. Ron Bush reached on a bunt when pitcher Danny Miller fired wide to first for an error. Bush advanced on a balk and scored on a base-hit by Rafael Alvarez to tie the game at 2-2. D.JK Johnson induced a groundout of Quero allowing Alvarez to advance to 2nd. Alvarez showed smarts on the bases by tagging up and easily advancing to 3rd. Alvarez cruised in with the winning run on a Brian Jones single to left.

Julio Perez slammed the door on the Lumberjacks in the 9th for his league leading 6th save.

Elmira snapped their 3-game losing streak and closed to within 3.5 games of division leading New Jersey with just 12 games remaining in the 1st half.
