
Ellsbury Scores Winning Run for Blue Rocks

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (26-28) were scheduled to play a double header on Friday night with the Salem Avalanche (22-31), Carolina League affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Blue Rocks won game one 6-5 in extra innings but game two was called because of rain before it even got started.
The Blue Rocks needed extra innings to win game one and it was Wilmington's fourth win in 13 extra inning games in 2006. Jacoby Ellsbury scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Ellsbury led off the frame with a walk then moved up to second on the sacrifice bunt from Iggy Suarez. Jeff Corsaletti followed up with a base hit to first baseman Mario Garza. Garza bobbled the ball, which allowed Ellsbury to score the wining run all the way from second.
Wilmington rallied from three runs down to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings. The Blue Rocks cut the lead to two in the fourth inning when Andrew Pinckney led off the inning with a home run to right, his fourth of the year.
Down by two runs in the sixth the Blue Rocks completed their three run rally with two runs to tie the game. Pinckney led off the frame with a single then Scott White followed up with an RBI triple. Zak Farkes came up next and connected for an RBI single scoring White and tie the game at 5-5.
The Blue Rocks took a 2-0 lead after two innings. Corsaletti and Jeff Natale drew back-to-back two-out walks in the first to set up John Otness. Otness followed up with an RBI single scoring Corsaletti to put Wilmington up 1-0.
The Blue Rocks made it 2-0 in the second inning when White scored from third on a throwing error from Salem starter Felipe Paulino. White led off the frame with a triple then Farkes followed up with a swinging bunt single down the first base line. Paulino fielded the ball and threw wide to first base allowing Farkes to be safe and White to score.
The Avalanche plated five runs in the fourth inning off starter Matt Goodson for a 5-2 lead. Goodson retired seven batters in a row before allowing five runs in the fourth inning on three hits and three walks. Drew Sutton led off the inning reaching on an error then came home to score on Scott Robinson's RBI double. Jeffery Macker and Matt Cunningham had back-to-back two-run doubles to give Salem a 5-2 lead.
Goodson lasted 3.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out four and walking three.
Justin Sturge recorded the win in relief allowing just two hits over two innings. Beau Vaughn and Mike James pitched a combined 3.1 innings allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out six.
The Blue Rocks and Avalanche continue their series on Saturday night and will play a double header to make up for the lost game on Friday night. Game one will begin at 5:05 p.m. with game two to follow 25 minutes after game one ends. Game one starters will be right-hander Scott Shoemaker (4-2, 4.09) for Wilmington and right-hander Evan Englebrook (3-3, 2.79) for Salem.
