P-Nats couldn't get breaks from anywhere

June 2, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, Va. - Matt Young had three hits and two runs while Van Pope smashed a three-run home run as Myrtle Beach made quick work of Potomac in winning 6-0 on Friday night.

Ian Desmond however, did not enjoy his night much as he was robbed of a hit, not buy a diving catch, but from a call at first with him on second base. After hitting a double in the fourth, Desmond was standing on second base when Pelican starter Kelvin Villa (3-1), stepped off the rubber and appealed that Desmond missed first base. The base umpire ruled in favor of Myrtle Beach and the rally came to a halt after an argument from both Desmond and Manager Randy Knorr.

Villa allowed four hits over six innings while his counterpart Jon Felfoldi (1-2) allowed three earned runs on seven hits in the same number of innings. Both starters struck out six. Villa also was able to pick off a couple of Nationals base runners in the first couple of innings, frustrating the effort.

Brett Nyquist, making his first appearance with Potomac this season after arriving at the ballpark around 4:30 p.m. with Chris Thompson, allowed Pope's blast in an inning of work. Thompson then came on and held the Pelicans off the board the rest of the way.

These two teams get set for a Saturday night battle with Classic Rock 94.7 presenting another great post-game fireworks show. Game time is 7:05 p.m. For more information or tickets, call (703) 590-2311.
