Edmonton Elks News Release

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Elks announced Sunday that the club has signed American Mekhai Johnson (RB) and released National Gabriel Appiah-Kubi (WR). The Elks also placed National Kevin Francis (LB) and American Martez Ivey (OL) on the suspended list.

Johnson rejoins the Elks after participating rookie camp before being released on May 13. The Dorchester, Mass., native rushed for 635 yards and scored eight touchdowns in 11 games of NCAA Division II football as a senior at Tusculum University in 2022.

Appiah-Kubi attended rookie camp with the Elks. The receiver from York University signed with the Green and Gold on May 5.

Francis signed with Edmonton on Feb. 14, after spending the 2022 season with the B.C. Lions. He has appeared in 82 CFL regular season games over his career, which includes stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2016-2018 and 2021) and Ottawa RedBlacks (2019).

Ivey suited up for 15 games with the Elks in the 2022 CFL season. The former Florida Gators lineman began his CFL career in 2021 with the Toronto Argonauts.

The Elks kicked off main camp Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium in advance of their first pre-season game, May 22 on the road against the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.
