Ekman named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Hartford Wolf Pack right wing Nils Ekman has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 30, 2003. Ekman recorded five goals and four assists for nine points and a plus-6 rating in four games last week, extending his scoring streak to an AHL season-high 14 games.
Ekman notched four multiple-point efforts on the week, beginning with a goal and an assist in Hartford's 7-4 loss to St. John's on Wednesday. He added two assists in a 4-3 overtime defeat in Springfield on Friday, then pitched in with a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-1 victory in Lowell. Ekman capped his week with a hat trick, his second of the season, as the Wolf Pack routed Bridgeport on Sunday, 8-0.
In recognition of his achievement, Ekman will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Central Connecticut Youth Hockey Association in Ekman's name.
Ekman has tallied a point in each of his last 14 games, the longest such streak in the AHL this season. He has 26 points during that span, and now has totaled 27 goals and 36 assists for 63 points in 54 contests with the Wolf Pack in 2002-03. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Ekman was originally drafted by Calgary and made his North American debut during Saint John's run to the 1998 Calder Cup Final. He has 71 NHL games to his credit, all with Tampa Bay.
