Eighth Inning Rally Breaks Tie, Sinks Snakes in Game One

Chico, Ca. - The Calgary Vipers gave up four runs in the eighth inning to be defeated 5-1 by the Chico Outlaws in Game 1 of the North Division Championship Series at Nettleton Stadium in Chico, California. With the victory the Outlaws lead the best of five series 1-0. Tied 1-1 the Vipers went to the bullpen where Jorge Vasquez (0-1) walked the leadoff man and later committed a throwing error to lead to the four-run frame. At the plate Calgary was kept at bay by Garrett Holleran (1-0) who tossed eight innings while allowing only one run.

The Snakes starter Reggie Rivard was excellent in throwing seven frames and giving up only one run on four hits.

Chico opened the scoring in the third inning when Blake Gailen singled, Bobby Hill walked, JJ Sherrill singled to load the bases, and Maikel Jova collected a run batted in base hit for a 1-0 advantage.

Calgary tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth frame as Caonabo Cosme singled, Reggie Rivard laid down a sacrifice bunt, with two outs Jonny Kaplan collected a base knock, and Jorge Mejia delivered a clutch RBI base hit.

The Outlaws went back ahead in the eighth when Mitch Einertson walked, Gailen dragged a perfect bunt for a single, Hill reached on a throwing error from Jorge Vasquez after a sacrifice bunt to load the bases, Jova collected a two-run double, Santo DeLeon hit a sacrifice fly, and Robby Alcombrack picked up a RBI single for a 5-1 lead.

Game 2 in Chico against the Outlaws in this best of five series will be played on Wednesday September 8th at 8:05 PM MDT with Mac Suzuki taking to the hill for the Vipers.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium for Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 10th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday September 12th at 1:35 PM MDT.
