Orange County Flyers News Release
WAILUKU, Hawai'i (September 6, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers mounted an 8-run comeback in the ninth inning to tie the game, but a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth brought home the winning run for Maui, 16-15, in the regular season finale on Monday night at Iron Maehara Stadium. In a game with zero implications one day before the playoffs, both teams battled a third inning power outage, on-and-off rains, and five combined position players pitching with all the intensity of a postseason game in the final inning.
The Flyers used three homeruns, including a two-run blast in the ninth inning by David Harris (8) to kick start the eight-run rally. Alex Jamieson and Zach Mandelblatt followed with base hits, and Keith Ginter and Steve Boggs continued the rally with RBI-singles, making it 15-11 Maui.
Keeble singled to load the bases, and Jimmy Rohan grounded out to cash Ginter. Eric Pringle added a two-run double, pulling the Flyers within a run, and a Kent Tsujimoto wild pitch brought home Pringle to tie the game, 15-15 after the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the inning, Zach Mandelblatt, who had pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth for the Flyers, allowed a leadoff single to Tsujimoto, who went first-to-third on a Paul Nishimura single and brought home the game winning run on a Mandelblatt wild pitch to Michael Higa.
Julian Benavidez and Tyler Keeble provided solo homeruns for the Flyers, and leadoff hitter Steve Boggs paced OC going 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
Gregorio Martinez, Maui's starting pitcher in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, came on to pitch in the sixth and hit Alex Jamieson with a 3-0 pitch to lead off the inning, prompting umpires to warn both dugouts. Three batters later, Martinez threw a 1-1 pitch a head-level to Boggs, who hit the deck to get out of the way. Martinez was ejected and had to be restrained by several teammates from going after the umpire.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, the outfield lights went out, causing a 20-minute delay in the game with Kevin Altman one strike away from getting out of the inning. Altman had retired all but one batter prior to the power outage but succumbed to a six-run Maui inning, helped in part by three Flyers errors, in the fourth.
The Orange County Flyers (51-35, 29-12 second half) begin a best-of-five playoff series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui (56-26, 30-9) in Maui on Tuesday, September 7, and will host Game 3 of the series on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field. OC will host Games 4 and 5, if necessary, on September 11 and 12. All games from Maui can be heard live through Live365 with Josh Feldman through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
