Edwards Scores 33 in T-Birds Second Straight Loss

Hidalgo, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (4-3) were able to overcome 33 points from Shane Edwards to beat the New Mexico Thunderbirds (4-3) by a score of 107-91.

Edwards led all scorers with 33 points on 8-16 shooting from the field and 17-21 free throws.

In the first quarter, the Thunderbirds raced out to a quick 11-0 lead in the first 1:47 of the game. For the second straight night, Edwards got off to a quick start, scoring six of the first 11 points for the team. The Thunderbirds led by as many as 14 in the opening quarter, but the Vipers closed the quarter on a 16-7 run to make the score 30-25.

The Vipers started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 33-32. The T-Birds answered with a 16-3 run to make the score 48-36 with 6:19 remaining in the half. Edwards had 20 points in the first half, but the Vipers closed the gap to 55-52 at the break.

Patrick Patterson got off to a quick start in the third quarter and went on a 6-0 run by himself to give the Vipers just their second lead of the game at 58-57. The T-Birds used a late 8-3 run to take a 78-73 run heading into the final quarter.

The Vipers began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run take their largest lead of the game, 82-78. After the Thunderbirds closed within two points at the 7:53 mark, the Vipers pulled away for good with a 10-2 run to take a 95-85 lead.

The Thunderbirds will continue their four-game road trip on Friday when they visit the Iowa Energy at 6:00 p.m.
