Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG- Robert Roth pitched threw five strong innings in a spot start while the normally supporting talent of Eric Bloom and Pascual Del Real had starring roles in the Edinburg Roadrunners' 9-3 victory against Rio Grande Valley at Edinburg Baseball Stadium Friday night.
Roth, who had previously not pitched more than two innings in his 20 relief appearances this season, allowed only four hits and one earned run as Roadrunners (58-35) manager Vince Moore shuffled his pitching staff to prepare for the playoffs, which begin on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth off Reymond Cruz (1-2). Tim Battle, Bloom, Del Real, Vincent Blue, and Wilmer Pino collected five consecutive hits with one out to give the Roadrunners the 5-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Pino, Bloom, and Del Real, the latter two the eighth and ninth place hitters in the Roadrunners' lineup getting spot starts of their own, all drove in two runs in the game.
Edinburg rightfielder Tim Battle collected three hits in a winning cause, while Stantrel Smith stole two bases to give him a North American Baseball League-leading 58 and 100 in two seasons as a Roadrunner.
The WhiteWings (50-42) and Roadrunners will play Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Harlingen Field for a fireworks night sponsored by the City of Harlingen. --1023692596-398243821-1346468676=:66649
