Edenton Earns Come From Behind Victory

THOMASVILLE, NC - The Edenton Steamers scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 8-5 win over the Thomasville Hi-Toms at Finch Field to remain undefeated this season.

Right-handed pitcher Kevin McCarthy (Marist College) made his second start of 2012 and second start against the Hi-Toms this season.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Dillon made his second start of 2012 on the other side of the diamond.

The first inning went by scoreless for both pitchers and Edenton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With one out Ray Ortega (Manhattan College) worked a walk. A batter later, Alex Kelly (Saint Louis University) was hit by a pitch. After Alex Alfonso (Florida Tech University) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Michael Green (UNC-Charlotte) brought home Ortega with an RBI infield single.

Thomasville brought home three runs in the bottom of the second against McCarthy. A leadoff double by DeSean Anderson began the rally. Greg Harrison hit a line drive off the leg of McCarthy that ricocheted into shallow left field and allowed Anderson to score from second and tie the game at 1-1. Kyle Arnsberg followed with a single that put runners on the corners and Seth Constable brought home Harrison with an RBI infield single for a 2-1 Thomasville lead. On Constable's single an error was charged to the second baseman Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) that allowed Arnsberg to go to third base. Will Canady brought home the third and final run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice and it was 3-1 Thomasville.

After a scoreless top of the third turned in by Dillon and Thomasville the Tommies added a run in the bottom half off David Teasley, who entered in relief of McCarthy. McCarthy pitched two innings, allowing four hits, three runs (all earned), he walked none and struck out one.

With one out Kyle Brandenberg reached on an infield single and stole his way to third and came home to score on the two out RBI single by DeSean Anderson to make it 4-1 Thomasville.

Edenton cut into the lead in the top of the fourth against Dillon. Ortega singled with one out and a wild pitch brought him to second base. Alfonso singled and the center fielder, Kyle Brandenberg, unleashed an errant throw to the plate that allowed Ortega to score and Alfonso to go to third. Michael Green followed with an RBI triple to make it 4-3 Thomasville.

Teasley pitched a scoreless bottom of the fourth and Edenton stranded a runner in the top of the fifth.

Travis Huber came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth for Edenton after Teasley pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits. He walked none and struck out none.

Huber relinquished a run with one out when Kyle Brandenberg doubled. DeSean Anderson knocked him in with a single to make it 5-3 Thomasville.

Matt Dillon pitched six innings for Thomasville allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, two walks and he struck out three. He left leading 5-3 heading to the top of the seventh.

Edenton got a run back in the top of the seventh off of Kyle Keller on a J.D Pullen single (Columbus State University) followed by a walk to Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) and two wild pitches that brought home Pullen to make the score 5-4 Thomasville.

DJ Johnson (Mercer University) came on and pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh to get Edenton back into the dugout trailing 5-4 heading to the top of the eighth.

Jordan Hudson came into the game for Thomasville in relief of Keller who pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on one hit, one walk and he struck out one.

Edenton wasted no time against Hudson, with the first three batters of the inning reaching base. Ortega reached on a walk and Kelly on a fielder's choice. On the play there was an error charged to the Thomasville second baseman Ben Hernandez that allowed Ortega to reach second base safely. Alex Alfonso loaded the bases with an infield single. With one out Pullen hit a ball to first base. Will Canady threw low to the plate and the ball went to the backstop allowing Ortega and Kelly to score to give Edenton a 6-5 lead. Alfonso ended up at third with Pullen at second. Nathan Burns (Florida International University) then lined a two-run single into right field to make it 8-5 Steamers.

Jordan Egan came on in the bottom of the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings to record his fourth save of the season in as many chances. DJ Johnson earned the win in relief, moving to 1-0, for his scoreless one inning and Jordan Hudson took the loss, falling to 0-1, pitching an inning and a third and allowing four runs (none earned), on two hits, two walks and he struck out three.
