Eastern League Announces Bank of America Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week Awards for the week ending May 18th:
Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Zach Daeges has been named the Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 18th. Daeges, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, had an outstanding week for the Sea Dogs, hitting .400 (8-for-20) with five doubles, one home run, seven RBI, six runs scored, eight walks and a .800 slugging percentage in six games. The 24-year old reached base in all six games he played in last week and he currently has reached base in 19 straight games, which is the longest current steak in the Eastern League and the fifth longest streak in the league this season. Daeges is hitting .346 in 24 games for the Sea Dogs, which would rank second if he had enough at bats to qualify. Zach, who hit .330 with 55 doubles, 21 homers, 124 runs scored and 113 RBI for the Lancaster JetHawks last year and was named a California League All-Star, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 6th round of the 2006 draft after hitting .350 with 13 homers and 49 RBI as a senior at Creighton University.

David Huff, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Akron Aeros, is the Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 18th. The 6'2", 190 lb. hurler made one start for the Aeros last week and was 1-0 with two strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in seven innings of work. Huff made his only appearance of the week for the Aeros on Thursday morning in the first game of a doubleheader at Altoona and struck out two batters and walked one while throwing a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Curve. With his performance on Thursday the 23-year old lowered his ERA to 2.14 and his WHIP to 0.86, both of which rank as the best in the Eastern League this season. David is also tied for first in the league in shutouts (1) and complete games (1) and his 43 strikeouts are the seventh best total in the league. Huff was selected by the Cleveland Indians as a supplemental 1st round pick in the 2006 draft after going 7-3 with 90 strikeouts and a 2.82 ERA in 121.1 innings of work as a junior at UCLA.
