San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes defeated FC Dallas 3-1 in their 2021 home opener at PayPal Park on Saturday. The Quakes got goals by Oswaldo Alanis, Cristian Espinoza, and Cade Cowell to jump out to a 3-0 lead before conceding a late consolation goal.

Cowell, 17, has been selected to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week for Week 2 after tallying a goal and the game-winning assist on Saturday. He became the sixth youngest player in MLS history to tally a goal and assist in a single match.

The Quakes are now preparing to host D.C. United this Saturday, presented by PayPal. Kickoff from PayPal Park is set for 8:00 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

LAST GAME VS. FC DALLAS (4/24)

For San Jose

After Saturday's result, the Earthquakes have now won five of their seven home openers at PayPal Park. The Quakes are also now 5-0-1 in their last six regular season home matches.

Fans are Back!

For the first time in over a year, San Jose welcomed fans back in the stadium, marking the first professional sporting event in Santa Clara County with fans since March 2020.

Unbeaten Run

The Earthquakes now hold a record of 4-0-3 in their last seven matches vs. FC Dallas, an unbeaten run extending back to April 14, 2017.

Home Opener Goal Scorer

Defender Oswaldo Alanis scored his first goal of the season and third of his MLS career. He has now scored in each of the Quakes' two home openers since joining the team.

Adding to the Final Score

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza tallied his first goal of the 2021 season and sixth of his MLS Career.

Making the Difference

Seventeen-year-old Cade Cowell recorded a goal and an assist in San Jose's victory over FC Dallas. Cowell's contributions on Saturday marked his first in both categories in 2021, and second in both categories in his MLS career.

Another Record

Cowell became the sixth youngest player in MLS history with a goal and assist in a single match at 17 years and 192 days.

NEXT GAME VS. D.C. UNITED (5/1)

Facing the East

San Jose will face D.C. United for the first time since June 2019. The Quakes last match against an Eastern Conference opponent was the Philadelphia Union on Sept. 25, 2019.

Record vs. D.C. United

The Quakes hold an overall record of 17-15-8 in regular season play versus D.C. United, including an 8-5-7 home record and outscoring them 31-29 at home.

Same Numbers

San Jose and D.C. United both sit in sixth place in their respective conferences with identical records (1-1-0).

Breaking the Streak

The Earthquakes look to break a winless streak against D.C. United that dates back to August 22, 2015, when the Quakes recorded a 2-0 shutout road victory.

Absent Player

San Jose will face D.C. without forward Chris Wondolowski, who must serve a one-game suspension stemming from a red card on Saturday.
