Columbus Crew Scouting Report

The Columbus Crew head into Week 3 with a 1-1-0 record after falling on the road against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday. Jairo Arrieta equalized in the 46th minute of that match, but a Kenny Miller goal in the 57th gave the Canadians the win. Four different Crew players have scored so far in 2013, the most noteworthy contributors being Argentine striker Federico Higuain and Costa Rican forward Arrieta. The latter led Columbus with nine goals in 2012 while Higuain burst onto the scene with five goals and a team-high seven assists in 13 games after signing as the club's third-ever Designated Player in late July.

Last Game vs. Columbus Crew

Earthquakes 1, Columbus Crew 1; May 19, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif.

San Jose striker Alan Gordon scissor-kicked home a point in the 90th minute as the Earthquakes picked up a dramatic 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew. For a second-straight week, it was Gordon coming off the bench to provide a timely equalizer. In San Jose's last game on May 13 against Chivas USA, Gordon got on the other end of a Sam Garza cross in the 88th minute to score the final goal of a 1-1 draw. This time, he drew crossbar with a blast from inside the box after a well-placed pass from Chris Wondolowski before side volleying in the game-tying goal. Similar to their last outing, San Jose held a significant advantage on the stat sheet. The Earthquakes out-shot the Crew 24-9, including an 8-1 margin on goal. Additionally, San Jose held 60 percent of the possession and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

History of the Quakes - Columbus Crew Rivalry

San Jose and Columbus, two of the 10 original sides from the inaugural MLS season in 1996, have had a strong rivalry in MLS history, facing off on two separate occasions in the playoffs and competing in a number of memorable games ... In 2001, the Quakes eliminated the Crew from the MLS Cup Playoffs with two convincing wins, 3-1 and 3-0, en route to winning the MLS Cup ... Columbus turned the tables on San Jose in 2002 by knocking the Quakes out of the postseason with a pair of 2-1 victories that both came on 81st-minute goals ... Quakes midfielder Ronnie Ekelund scored one of the best goals in league history against Columbus on Sept. 7, 2002, as Richard Mulrooney lifted a free kick up for Ekelund, who half-volleyed a shot from 25 yards out and into the upper corner ... The Quakes went on to win 4-3 in overtime with current goalkeeper Jon Busch in net for the Crew ... That result marked the team's only regular-season overtime win in team history (1-1-26), with the league eliminating overtime for the regular season following 2003 ... In 2010, both games ended in ties ... After a 2-2 draw in San Jose, with goals from Eddie Gaven and Chad Marshall for the Crew and Arturo Alvarez and Chris Wondolowski for the Earthquakes, the two sides battled to a 0-0 tie in Columbus ... Last season, the Earthquakes took the first game, 3-0, with goals from Wondolowski, Brandon McDonald and Khari Stephenson all coming over a 12-minute span in the second half ... The teams played to another scoreless deadlock in Columbus on July 16, 2011 ... Their 2012 match-up has roots with the Earthquakes' "Goonies never say die," slogan as Alan Gordon scored a 90th-minute equalizer to lock the game at 1-1 on May 19 at Buck Shaw Stadium (one week later, Gordon would score a stoppage-time winner against the LA Galaxy, spurring teammate and former Crew forward Steven Lenhart to proclaim, "Goonies never say die!"
