Last Game

Kansas City Wizards 2, Earthquakes 0; April 5, 2009; CommunityAmerica Ballpark: Kansas City, Kan.

A buzzing Kansas City attack and a revamped Wizards lineup were too much for the San Jose Earthquakes to overcome in a 2-0 road loss Sunday afternoon at Community America Ballpark. Kansas City defender Aaron Hohlbein's first professional goal in the 28th minute and Claudio Lopez's 78th-minute goal sent the Quakes down in a game played in sustained winds of 25-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph that ushered in rain and a 19-degree wind chill. Kansas City dominated most of the opening 20 minutes, reeling off multiple advances, corners and free kicks toward goalkeeper Joe Cannon's goal. Lopez had Cannon one-on-one in the third minute after a deflected through ball from countryman Santiago Hirsig, but his ensuing shot was smothered by an advancing Cannon. Lopez returned dangerously into the Quakes area down the right wing in the 20th minute off a ball by Watson. Seeing midfielder Josh Wolff open high at the back post, Lopez found the veteran, who was playing a midfield role, but his shot scooted just wide as Cannon rushed to his right post. But the Earthquakes would finally pay for their lack of sustained possession in the 28th minute. Davy Arnaud's shot from 17 yards was blocked by San Jose forward Cam Weaver and followed by a point-blank shot by K.C.'s Jimmy Conrad. A prone Cannon made the save, but Hohlbein directed the loose ball into the back of the net for his first goal of his three-year career. San Jose head coach Frank Yallop responded by inserting former Columbus and LA Galaxy man Simon Elliott into the midfield in place of back Eric Denton. The move nearly paid off two minutes on as Elliott loaded up and struck just high and left of Kevin Hartman's goal. In the 78th minute, Lopez put the nail in the San Jose coffin off a terrific assist from Herculez Gomez. On the right wing near midfield, Gomez placed a flighted ball over the defense and into the path of the Wizards forward. With time, Lopez took his touches and skillfully slid the ball into Cannon's far post as the netminder slid hopelessly on the wet surface.

Last Match vs. Chicago

Earthquakes 0, Chicago Fire 0; June 28, 2008; Toyota Park: Bridgeview, Ill

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 0-0 tie on the road against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. The Quakes hit the post late in the match and Joe Cannon made two brilliant second-half saves to preserve the shutout. Cannon had to face a shot in the first minute of the game when Fire midfielder Justin Mapp found forward Tomasz Frankowski in the 18-yard box for an open attempt. Cannon's dive to his right was the right move and he punched the ball away. Forward Ryan Johnson had one of the Earthquakes two first-half shots on a header in the fifth minute. The second header was by Kei Kamara in the 17th minute that went wide left. In the 10th minute, Fire forward Andy Herron attempted a bicycle kick that went straight at Cannon, and Herron was injured on the play. In the 52nd minute, Kamara was dragged to the ground by Fire defender Bakary Soumare after a misaimed header by Fire defender Brandon Prideaux set Kamara up just atop the penalty area. Corrales took the free kick but it glanced off the crossbar and out of play. The Earthquakes began to push the attack from that point, and in the 57th minute Johnson had the ball outside the box left and sent a cross to Kamara. But the Earthquakes forward collided with Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch to end the play. The Fire went close when a header by Gonzalo Segares from a free kick by Cuauhtémoc Blanco in the 60th minute went above the crossbar. The Fire had a corner kick in the 71st minute, and the ball eventually popped out to Mapp on the left wing. His shot was punched up and over the goal by Cannon, one of his four saves on the night. In the 83rd minute, a battle for the ball between Segares and Quakes striker John Cunliffe led to a free kick for the Earthquakes to the right of the box. Ronnie O'Brien's offering flew over the crowd and out of bounds. In the 86th minute, the Earthquakes had their best chance to score, when Salinas found himself open on the right side wide of the box and fired a shot that glanced off the far post and back out to Kamara at the top of the box. Kamara dribbled for a clear shot but his attempt went wide left. Ivan Guerrero had a clear run at Busch in the 88th minute but Fire defender Soumare made a slide tackle from Guerrero's right at the last moment that stopped the scoring attempt.
