San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the LA Galaxy 2-1 on Saturday night at Earthquakes Stadium, giving San Jose it's second win over an LA team in the span of one week. Saturday's match also saw defender Marcos Lopez score the first goal of his MLS career.

The Earthquakes are now scheduled to play a pair of matches again this week, first hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, Oct. 7, presented by Clover, before traveling to face the Portland Timbers on Sunday, Oct. 11, presented by Lux Bus America.

Wednesday's kickoff from Earthquakes Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. Sunday's match from Providence Park is slated for 7:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Climbing the Rankings

With back-to-back wins over LAFC and the LA Galaxy, San Jose has climbed three places in the Western Conference standings and are now just one point below the playoff line.

California is Black and Blue

Saturday's win over the LA Galaxy gave San Jose it's second win over an LA team in the span of one week.

Spooky Season

Wondolowski has scored 24 goals in his career during the month of October. No other player in MLS history has more than 14 career goals during the month.

Helpful Hand

Quakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza has seven assists this season, tied for third most in MLS (Pozuelo - 9; Quintero - 8).

California Love

The Quakes now hold a 5-2-2 record in their last nine meetings with the Galaxy.

Solid Defense

The Quakes held LA to just one shot on target.

First Goal

Defender Marcos Lopez scored the first goal of his MLS career.

For the Win

Forward Andy Rios scored his third goal of the season and fourth of his MLS career. It also marked the first game-winning goal of his MLS career.

Offensive Teamwork

Defender Nick Lima and midfielder Cristian Espinoza were both credited with an assist on Lopez's goal. It marked their first and seventh assist of the season, respectively.

Three Straight

The Earthquakes have won all three matches against Vancouver Whitecaps FC since the start of the 2019 season, scoring at least three goals in each of them.

Goals Galore

Neither team has been able to keep a clean sheet in this series since scoreless draw back on Oct. 16, 2020. Eight matches have taken place since.

Wondo-ful Performances

Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski has scored 14 goals in his career against Vancouver. No other player in MLS history has more than six goals against the Canadian side.

The Quakes currently hold a 5-12-8 record vs. the Portland Timbers in 25 MLS matches between the two sides.

Seeking First Away Win

San Jose will be seeking their first-ever road victory against Portland on Sunday. The Quakes are currently 0-9-3 against the Oregon side in MLS play.

Top of the Charts

Forward Chris Wondolowski has scored 11 goals in 20 prior appearances against Portland, most by any player against the club in MLS history.

First MLS Goal

Midfielder Carlos Fierro scored his first MLS goal in their last match against Portland at Earthquakes Stadium on Sept. 19.

Trust in the Youth

Homegrown goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski and eighteen-year-old Homegrown defender Jacob Akanyirige made their first appearances of the season against Portland at Earthquakes Stadium on Sept. 16. The match marked Akanyirige's MLS debut, becoming the sixth Homegrown player in club history to play in an official match.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC defeated the Tacoma Defiance 2-1 last Saturday to earn a league-best 36 points on the regular season. Reno 1868 FC would then secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs for the first time in club history after San Antonio FC's loss on Sunday guaranteed the top overall seed for Reno.

Reno has a 5-1-2 home record from Greater Nevada Field this season, currently unbeaten in six straight home games, scoring 20 goals in the stretch and owning a +11 goal differential.

The playoffs kickoff for Reno this Saturday, Oct. 10 against LA Galaxy II at 6:00 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast nationally from Greater Nevada Field on ESPN+.

Prior to Saturday's match, Reno earned a 2-2 home draw against Las Vegas Lights FC last Wednesday, securing the top spot in Group A and a third-straight Silver State Cup. Forward Foster Langsdorf kept his streak going, scoring for the eighth time in the last nine games.
