HOUSTON - The Houston Dynamo signed winger Mateo Bajamich on a full transfer from Instituto AC in Argentina, the club announced today. The transfer is pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. Bajamich will join the club upon completion of the mandatory quarantine period outlined by local health officials and MLS.
The 21-year-old scored 10 goals and tallied six assists in 28 matches with Instituto during his time with the club. He made his debut on February 23, 2019 against Nueva Chicago at the age of 19.
"After a lengthy process, we are pleased to welcome Mateo Bajamich to the Houston Dynamo," said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. "Mateo is a talented young player who can create chances and score goals in the final third, while showing a willingness to put in the work defensively. We are confident Mateo will be in an environment with our club and our staff to develop and grow while helping the team be successful."
The winger scored his first professional goal on Aug. 23, 2019 against CA Sarmiento and added the game-winning goal two weeks later in a 1-0 victory over Chacarita Juniors. His first professional brace followed on Sept. 14 in a 3-0 victory over Brown Adrogue. Bajamich appeared in seven games in the 2018/2019 season scoring one goal and adding three assists in debut campaign.
Bajamich was born in Morrison, Argentina, located between Cordoba and Rosario. He acquired his Croatian passport earlier this year and is eligible for selection with the Croatian national team program.
With the addition of Bajamich, the Dynamo now have 29 players under contract for the 2020 season. Bajamich will occupy an international roster slot and is under contract through the 2022 season with club options through 2025.
