San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy 3-2 last Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park. Sixteen-year-old Cade Cowell became the youngest player in club history to start and the youngest player in club history to score, while rookie defender Tanner Beason made his MLS debut.

The Earthquakes have returned to San Jose and will travel back to Los Angeles to face LAFC at Banc of California Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 2, before hosting the Colorado Rapids at Earthquakes Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Wednesday's match, presented by Michelob ULTRA, is set for 8:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on UniMas/TUDN, KNBR 1050 and1370 KZSF. Saturday's match is slated for 7:30 p.m. PT and can be seen on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

Current Standings

San Jose now holds a 2-2-2 record this season and sit in eighth place in the Western Conference.

Closing in on History

Shea Salinas is just one assist shy of tying Ronald Cerritos for most in club history (47).

Moving On Up

Salinas recently surpassed 16,000 minutes played with the Earthquakes, becoming just the third player in club history to hit the milestone.

LAST GAME VS. LA GALAXY

Belief in the Youth

San Jose had three Homegrown Players in the starting lineup for just the fourth time in club history and first time since 2018.

Showing Great Potential

Sixteen-year-old Cade Cowell scored his first MLS goal during his first MLS start, playing 67 minutes. He has now made three appearances for the Quakes this season.

MLS Start

Rookie defender Tanner Beason made his MLS debut, starting and playing 90 minutes.

Our New Captain

Midfielder Jackson Yueill wore the captain's armband for the first time with the Quakes.

25th Quakes Goal

Midfielder Vako scored his second goal of the season and 25th of his MLS career. With the goal, he tied Brian Ching for fifth most goals in Earthquakes history.

Goal Assisters

Defender Tommy Thompson and Midfielder Cristian Espinoza both tallied an assist on Vako's goal, their second and third of the season, respectively.

NEXT GAME VS. LAFC

The First Time

San Jose will be seeking their first-ever victory against LAFC on Wednesday. The Quakes are currently 0-4-0 against the SoCal side in MLS play.

Scoring against the Opponent

Chris Wondolowski has scored twice against LAFC, tied for fourth most in MLS history against the third-year club.

Opportunity to Climb

San Jose, one point behind LAFC in the Western Conference standings, could jump above the playoff line with a win.

NEXT GAME VS. COLORADO RAPIDS

Overall Record

The Quakes currently hold a 30-22-16 record vs. the Colorado Rapids in 68 MLS matches between both clubs.

Home Advantage

The Quakes remain undefeated at home against Colorado since the opening of Earthquakes Stadium in 2015 with a 4-0-1 record.

Back at Home

Saturday's match will mark the first time the Quakes will play at Earthquakes Stadium since March 7 due to the league stoppage earlier this year.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Earthquakes vs. Portland Timbers match rescheduled to Sept. 16

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that their match against the Portland Timbers, which was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Aug. 26, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Sept. 16. The match, presented by Fastmetrics, kicks off from Earthquakes Stadium at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC topped Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 at home last Saturday. Reno's defense held the highest scoring team in the league, and three of the top five individual scorers, to just one goal. Corey Hertzog scored the game winner and assisted on Foster Langsdorf's third goal in as many games. Reno moves out of a tie with Sacramento for first place in Group A with 21 points.

Reno will now host Portland Timbers 2 at Greater Nevada Field next Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. PT.

Reno signed midfielder Jesús "Chuy" Enríquez last Wednesday, pending league and federation approval. Enríquez started 2020 with San Antonio FC, appearing in three games. Before that, Enríquez spent two years with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. For the Toros, he earned 10 goals and nine assists in 61 appearances and 49 starts. In 2018, Enríquez led RGV in both goals (six) and assists (six).

In addition to adding Enríquez, Reno 1868 and defender Yosimar Hernandez have mutually agreed to part ways.

Earlier in the week, midfielder Tucker Bone was named to the USL's Team of the Week for week nine. The midfielder notched a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win at San Diego on Saturday.

Bone is the fourth different Reno player to earn the honors, joining Christiano François, Eric De La Cerda and Corey Hertzog. Bone's appearance on the team is the third straight week an 1868 player has earned the honor.
