San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Seattle Sounders FC 4-3 ( highlights) at PayPal Park on Saturday in the team's first MLS match under interim head coach Alex Covelo. The Quakes erased a 3-1 deficit to earn the dramatic victory, with Cristian Espinoza tallying three goals and an assist.
Following his effort on Saturday, Espinoza was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 8. Espinoza was also selected to Major League Soccer's Team of the Week along with interim head coach Alex Covelo, who was making his MLS head coaching debut.
In addition to the regular season victory on Saturday, the Earthquakes also defeated Bay Cities FC 5-0 in the Third Round of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday. San Jose has advanced to the Round of 32 and will face Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday, May 11 (7 p.m. PT) at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.
Earthquakes II of MLS NEXT Pro plays the Tacoma Defiance, affiliate of Seattle Sounders FC, tonight, at PayPal Park. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT and a live stream of the match can be watched here .

First Win
Tonight's victory marked the first for San Jose in the 2022 MLS season and first over Seattle Sounders FC at PayPal Park (1-4-4).
Never Say Die
San Jose handed Seattle their first-ever defeat when they led by 2+ goals. Seattle entered the match 128-0-1 in 129 prior matches when leading by two goals at any point (regular season + postseason). Seattle had won 123 such matches in a row dating back to June 2009.
New Beginnings
The Quakes are now 2-0-0 under interim head coach Alex Covelo in all competitions, outscoring opponents 9-3.
Hat Trick Hero
Midfielder Cristian Espinoza scored three goals, marking the first multi-goal game of his MLS career, including his sixth career game-winning goal. He also tallied his third assist of the season and the 33rd assist of his MLS career.

Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro tallied two assists, marking his third career multi-assist game and first since July 3, 2019 (w/ PHI).
First of the Year

Earthquakes to Face Seattle Sounders FC in U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on May 11
The San Jose Earthquakes will face Seattle Sounders FC in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday, May 11 (7 p.m. PT) at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. The two sides have faced each other five times in the U.S. Open Cup, with San Jose holding a 2-3-0 record. The Earthquakes won the most recent matchup 2-1 on June 28, 2017, at PayPal Park. San Jose advanced to the Round of 32 after defeating Bay Cities FC 5-0 on April 19. The Quakes utilized a young lineup, which included six players in the starting XI that were 23 years of age or younger.
Niko Tsakiris Called to U.S. U20 National Team Training Camp
San Jose Earthquakes Homegrown midfielder Niko Tsakiris has been called to the United States U20 Men's National Team for a training camp at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. from April 22 - May 1. Tsakiris, 16, is the second youngest of 22 players called by head coach Mikey Varas.
Emi Ochoa, Two Quakes Academy Players Called to United States U19 National Team
Earthquakes Homegrown goalkeeper Emi Ochoa has been called to the United States U19 Men's National Team for a training camp at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. from April 22 - May 1. Ochoa will be joined by Quakes Academy midfielder/defender Ethan Kohler and defender Nathan Rodrigues. All three players, born in May 2005, are 16 years old.
Two Quakes Academy Players Called to U.S. U15 National Team for International Tournament
Quakes Academy midfielders Owen Anderson and Rohan Rajagopal were called up to the United States U15 Men's National Team ahead of their participation in the Torneo delle Nazioni that will take place at several venues across Austria, Italy and Slovenia from April 25 - May 1. Both players are among the 20 players called by head coach Tom Heinemann for the 12-team tournament. Only the New York Red Bulls (3) are sending more players to the U15s than San Jose.
Earthquakes Partner with Uber for Ride Share and Mobile Ordering at PayPal Park
The Quakes and Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER) announced last Wednesday a multi-year partnership that will see Uber become the Official Ride Share partner and Official Mobile Ordering and Delivery partner of the Quakes. Central to the partnership, fans at PayPal Park will now be able to order ahead on their mobile devices through the Uber Eats app and collect their food and beverages at a designated pickup window.
EARTHQUAKES II UPDATE

ACADEMY UPDATE
The Quakes Academy Boys U13s (W 1-0) and U14s (2-0) defeated Lamorinda SC on Saturday, and the U13s (T 2-2) and U14s (W 4-1) played the SF Glens on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Boys U15s (T 0-0) and U17s (T 3-3) faced the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.
The U13s and U14s will now prepare to host the California Odyssey on Saturday and Napa United on Sunday, while U15s and U17s will travel to Washington to face Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday.
