San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes beat El Sueño de tu Vida All-Stars 6-0 on Friday night at PAL Stadium. The Quakes got three goals in each half to put away the local all-stars. Antonio Ribeiro and guest player Ismael Ibarra both scored a pair of goals, while Quincy Amarikwa and Simon Elliott added a goal each. Andrew Weber and Mike Graczyk combined to post the shutout.
The Quakes applied plenty of early pressure, as Ryan Johnson had a chance in the fifth minute and his effort was thwarted by goalkeeper Mario Obeso. Johnson had another quality opportunity three minutes later, as his full volley effort from just inside the area flew inches wide.
San Jose kept the pressure on, and the chances kept piling up, until they finally broke through in the 24th minute as Shea Salinas picked out Amarikwa at the back post and his diving header left Obeso with no chance.
Salinas figured in the Quakes' second goal after service from Mike Zaher found him at the back post and his pass picked out Elliott at the penalty spot. Elliott he slotted it home in the 34th minute to double San Jose's lead.
Ribeiro scored on a full volley in the 38th minute of play after a nice Chris Wondolowski cross found Johnson, and his header fell to Ribeiro who blasted in his first in a San Jose uniform.
San Jose opened the second half like they finished the first, attacking in waves. Second half substitute Darren Huckerby served a cross in that picked out Johnson, whose header flicked just wide of the target. Minutes later
Ribeiro found the net again, this time on a corner kick, as Huckerby's inswinger found Johnson, and it fell right to Ribeiro to make it 4-0.
Guest player Ismael Ibarra added the fifth as he chipped the goalkeeper in the 57th minute after a nice long ball from Amarikwa. He tallied his second with three minutes remaining, as Ribeiro's pass found him for a tap-in.
San Jose hosts Salvadoran side C.D. Aguila on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Buck Shaw Stadium in another friendly. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT.
