San Jose Earthquakes News Release
San Jose (Thursday, January 9, 2003) - The San Jose Earthquakes and Major League Soccer announced today that forward Ariel Graziani has been loaned to Barcelona Sporting Club of the Ecuadorian League for the entire 2003 MLS season. The Earthquakes made the difficult decision to release Graziani to MLS, which then conducted the loan.
"It is very difficult to give up a player of Ariel's quality," said Earthquakes General Manager Johnny Moore. "However, salary cap restrictions gave us no other choices. We are still very confident that we can build a competitive team to go out and try and win back the MLS Cup."
Graziani, 31, played one season for San Jose and appeared in 28 games, scoring 14 goals and registering five assists. While born in Argentina, Graziani holds Ecuadorian citizenship and has made 33 appearances for the Ecuadorian National Team. Graziani last played in Ecuador in 1997 for Emelec.
The Empalme, Argentina native remains under contract with MLS.
