San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell 5-0 against FC Dallas on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Earthquakes saw home debuts for recently-signed Designated Player Matias Perez Garcia and Homegrown Player Tommy Thompson, but couldn't reverse their fortunes after falling behind 2-0 in the first half.
San Jose had its chances early, the most dangerous of which came from Sam Cronin in the 16th minute. After combining with Matias Perez Garcia in the box, Chris Wondolowski led a pass ahead of a darting Sam Cronin. Cronin redirected the ball with a sliding effort, but was denied on the goal line by FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.
FC Dallas broke the scoring deadlock in 30th minute with a goal from Fabian Castillo. After speeding past Jason Hernandez to win the ball, Castillo sprinted toward the edge of the six-yard box and lofted his shot over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Tesho Akindele scored his first of three goals just before the break. The rookie forward coolly placed a shot along the ground to the far corner, weaving the ball past a pair of Earthquakes defenders. He followed that effort up by polishing off a blocked shot from Busch that bounced away from the goalkeeper's body, allowing Akindele to pounce on the loose ball for his second goal. Akindele completed his first career hat trick in the final moments of the match, crushing another blocked shot from Busch into the roof of the net.
Castillo accounted for the remaining goal in the 75th minute. The speedster caught San Jose with a counter-attack and found himself one-on-one with Hernandez. Castillo dribbled into the left side of the box, cut back to his right foot and uncorked his first career multi-goal game.
San Jose out-shot FC Dallas 25-18 on the night. The shot total was the Quakes have taken since firing 27 times on opening day in a 3-3 draw with Real Salt Lake.
The Earthquakes return to MLS action on Wednesday, Aug. 20 against Seattle Sounders FC at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
