San Jose Earthquakes News Release

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The San Jose Earthquakes rallied from a one-goal deficit to tie before halftime, but a penalty given was the difference in a 2-1 loss at BC Place against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday.

Despite the loss, the Earthquakes (13-5-4, 43 pts.) retained their spot atop the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings, four points up on Real Salt Lake (12-7-3, 39 pts.

Playing their third game in nine days, the Earthquakes pelted Vancouver's attacking third for much of the night, outshooting their hosts 18-9. However, it was Whitecaps FC who would strike first.

After Dane Richards buried a shot from close range to give Vancouver an initial 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, the Earthquakes created a number of chances before finally breaking through in the 38th. Jason Hernandez started the scoring sequence by stepping in front of a Whitecaps FC pass near midfield. He then slid a ball to Marvin Chavez in space before the Honduran winger zipped a cross to the far post where Alan Gordon headed home the equalizer.

The goal was Gordon's ninth of the season, a career high. Additionally, Gordon's next goal would mark the first time since 1997 and the third time in club history that multiple Earthquakes players have recorded double-digit goals in the same season. Meanwhile, Chavez slotted in his ninth assist of the year, tied for second-most in MLS.

The deciding goal game in the 63rd minute as Harry Robson finished a penalty chance for Vancouver after the assistant referee signaled for an Earthquakes foul in the box.

San Jose returns to action on Saturday, July 28 against the Chicago Fire at Buck Shaw Stadium for Lenhart Wig Night, presented by Cosmopolitan Catering. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
