San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired goalkeeper Daniel on a permanent transfer from Brazilian club Internacional and signed him to a contract through the 2024 season with club option for 2025, using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
"Daniel comes to San Jose with an impressive pedigree from a top league and club in South America," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "He has made nearly 50 appearances in the top-flight Brazilian Serie A, as well as premier domestic and international tournaments. We believe his quality will add a different level of competition to the goalkeeper position."
Daniel, 28, has spent his entire professional career with Internacional in his native Brazil. He has recorded 37 shutouts in 83 career matches, conceding just 74 total goals.
Daniel began his career at the youth ranks of União Rondonopolis before joining the U17 squad at Internacional in 2011. He made his first team debut in 2017 and helped the club earn promotion to Serie A with a second-place finish that season.
Daniel made just two appearances between 2018 and 2020 before earning a bigger role in 2021. That season, he made 33 starts across all competitions, including two as part of Copa Libertadores, and conceded just 28 goals (0.84 per game) while keeping 16 clean sheets.
In 2022, Daniel made 45 starts across all competitions, including 23 in Serie A and nine in Copa Sudamericana. He allowed just 43 goals in his 45 matches (0.96 per game) and recorded 19 shutouts.
