Early Runs Help Ports To 4-2 Win May 28th 2017, 03:44
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The Stockton Ports scored three runs in the first inning and rode them to a win on Saturday night. Ports pitching walked a season-high nine batters but allowed just three hits to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes as Stockton held on for a 4-2 win to pull even in the four-game series.
The Quakes had Dodgers right-hander Brock Stewart (0-1) making the start on a Major League rehab assignment and Stewart's night got off on the wrong foot. Josh Vidales reached to open the game on an error committed by Quakes first baseman Ibandel Isabel . Eli White followed with a double that put runners at second and third and James Harris drove in the first Ports run with an infield single. On a pitch in the third, Harris took second base and the throw from Quakes catcher Will Smith sailed into center field and allowed White to score to make it a 2-0 Ports lead. After a one out walk and a single by Sean Murphy to load the bases, Stewart was lifted for Parker Curry, who gave up a single to Mikey White that made it a 3-0 edge for Stockton.
Stewart suffered the loss in his rehab appearance, going a third of an inning and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out one. Curry went an inning-and-two-thirds scoreless and allowed two hits while striking out three.
Dennis Santana took over in the third and gave up back-to-back hits to Murphy and Tyler Ramirez to start the inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Branden Cogswell grounded out to first to bring in the fourth Stockton run of the night and make it a 4-0 advantage. It would be the final run scored by Stockton on the night and the lone run allowed by Santana, who went six innings and scattered six hits while striking out five.
Ports starter A.J. Puk (3-4) retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced, including seven consecutive batters in that span. Puk pitched around a leadoff walk in the fourth and a bases-loaded, one-out jam after a pair of walks and an error in the fifth. Puk would get through the fifth and go on to pick up the win, tossing five scoreless frames and allowing just one hit while matching a season-high with four walks and striking out eight.
Will Gilbert took over in the sixth and, on three walks, loaded the bases with one out. Jared Walker came up and delivered a two-run single to right that cut the Stockton lead in half at 4-2 and put runners at the corners with one out. Gilbert would induce an inning-ending 4-6-3 double-play ball off the bat of Ariel Sandoval to avoid further damage.
Gilbert left the came with two on and two out in the seventh after allowing a walk and a single. Nolan Blackwood (SV, 4) came on and escaped the jam by getting Omar Estevez to ground out to end the inning.
Blackwood would go on to retire seven of the eight batters he faced and earn his fourth save of the season. Blackwood did not allow a hit and gave up just one walk while striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
The Ports and Quakes play the third game of their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Loan Mart Field. Angel Duno (3-1, 6.55 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Quakes right-hander Yadier Alvarez (0-1, 4.73 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. PDT.
