Early Lead, Strong Start from Gunn Leads 'Cats to 3-2 Win over RedHawks

FARGO, N.D. - Three runs after three innings and 5.1 innings of one-run ball from Alex Gunn was enough for Gary on Tuesday night in the series opener against Fargo-Moorhead as the RailCats downed the RedHawks, 3-2, in front of a sold out 4,494 fans on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Newman Outdoor Field. Gary never trailed in the game and are now 15-5 against Fargo-Moorhead since 2017.
Gary (28-26) took the opening lead of the series with a pair of unearned runs in the first. Alex Crosby was hit in the right elbow on the second pitch of the game before D.K. Carey reached on a bunt single, however, Crosby was able to go first to third after a throwing error from Fargo-Moorhead first baseman Chris Jacobs sailed past the covering Sebastian Kessay at first. Randy Santiesteban followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Crosby from third and advancing Carey from first to second. Colin Willis then grounded out to Yhoxian Medina at shortstop, moving Carey up to third before Andy Paz increased the Gary lead to 2-0 with a two-out RBI single to left.
The RailCats tacked on another run in the third to go up by three. Santiesteban led off the inning with a single to left before Willis was hit in the ribs. Paz then bounced into a double play, moving Santiesteban to third before a wild pitch from Kessay brought Santiesteban in to score from third.
Fargo-Moorhead (30-25) cut the Gary lead to two with a two-out run the sixth. Brennan Metzger recorded his second of two hits with a leadoff single to left to start the frame. Metzger took second on a wild pitch before stealing third. Two batters later, Keury De La Cruz brought home Metzger with an RBI single to center.
The RedHawks got their final run on an opposite field, solo homer from Chris Jacobs with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Fargo-Moorhead had the tying run reach second base after Devan Ahart drew a walk and swiped, however, Adam Quintana got Tim Colwell to lineout softly to Andy De Jesus at shortstop to end the game.
Gunn (5-4) recorded the win after allowing one run on seven hits, a walk and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings while Myles Smith (3) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for his third hold the season. Quintana (4) allowed one run on a hit and a walk and struck out a pair in the six-out save. Kessay (3-3) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, three walks, two hit batters and five strikeouts in a season-high eight innings.
Gary resumes their six-game, seven-day road trip and three-game series against Fargo-Moorhead on Wednesday at 7:02 p.m. RailCats RHP Gabe Perez (2-0, 3.81) opposes RedHawks RHP DJ Brown (6-0, 3.31) in the middle game of the series.
Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Friday, July 20th vs. the St. Paul Saints. Friday's game is Kevin "Bacon" Night and includes bacon-themed concession specials, as well as another Fifth Third Bank Fireworks Friday.
