GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Texas AirHogs took the third game of the four-game set vs. the Chicago Dogs Tuesday by a final of 3-1 at AirHogs Stadium.
Sun Jianzeng (1-4) earned his first victory of the year by pitching into the seventh for the first time this season. He limited the Dogs to a first-inning run by inducing two double plays and powering through five of seven leadoff men reaching. He scattered eight hits while striking out one and walking one on the way to the victory.
The AirHogs tagged Chicago starter Connor Root for two runs in the fourth. Chu Fujia, returning from an injury that kept him out of the lineup since June 10, started the frame with a double. He would score on a throwing error by Dogs second baseman Edwin Arroyo on a ball put in play by Stewart Ijames. Ijames would score later in the frame on the first of two RBI singles by Chen Junpeng to make it 2-1.
Qi Xin entered in relief of Sun in the seventh and got an 8-4 double play with the help of center fielder Dillon Thomas to work out of an inherited jam. Thomas doubled to start the eighth and came in to score on the second RBI single of the game by Chen Junpeng.
Taylor Wright and Carlos Contreras combined for scoreless eighth and ninth frames, with Contreras earning his second save of the series and seventh of the season. The AirHogs bullpen did not allow a baserunner in three frames of work.
Four AirHogs finished with two hits, including catcher Li Ning, who recorded two singles. Texas outhit Chicago 10-8. Texas turned three double plays to match a season-high.
Texas (15-41) will close the series vs. the Chicago Dogs (21-34) tomorrow at 7:05. RHP Meng Weiqiang (4-5, 4.42 ERA) will start for Texas vs. RHP Josh Goossen-Brown (4-4, 4.60 ERA) for Chicago. A live stream will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
