Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Sanford Mainers, 4-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Sunday night. With the win, the Mountaineers move to 3-4 on the summer.
Two Mountaineers runs in the first inning would prove to be enough of a cushion for Vermont starter Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley), as he dazzled in his second consecutive start against the Mainers. Ashbeck earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season by hurling seven innings of one run ball. The right-hander allowed six hits and one walk, while striking out three.
The two runs in the bottom of the first came off the bat of right fielder Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg), who ripped a two out, two RBI double that one hopped the left field wall to score Rob Knightes (St. John's) from third and Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) from second. Both Knightes and Brock had singled off Sanford starter Christian Lavoie (UMass-Lowell) earlier in the inning.
Lavoie took the loss, falling to 0-1, as he gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out one.
The Mountaineers added one run in the second inning when Mike Krische (Canisius) reached on a bunt single to lead off the frame. Krische stole second and moved to third when Trey West (Le Moyne) reached on a fielder's choice with still no one out. Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) followed by grounding out to third, but Krische scored on the play to open up a 3-0 lead for Vermont.
The Mainers scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth before Vermont added its final run of the game in the fifth. Charbonneau led off the inning with a single to center. Alex Caruso (St. John's) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Charbonneau to second. Knightes proceeded to hit an RBI single to score Charbonneau and give the Mountaineers a 4-1 edge.
Knightes and Krische led Vermont with a team-high two hits apiece.
Sam Spencer (Castleton) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit. He struck out four, including striking out the side in order in the eighth.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday night when they host Northern Division rival, the Keene Swamp Bats, for the first time this summer. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
