Two-Hitter Not Enough for Swamp Bats

June 15, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

Despite holding the New Bedford Bay Sox to just two hits, the Keene Swamp Bats dropped their fifth straight game on Sunday night, this one by a score of 1-0.

The loss drops the Swamp Bats to 1-6 on the year, while New Bedford picks up their first win of the year and sits at 1-5.

Ryan Lawlor (Georgia) was dominant for Keene through the first four innings, but ran into some trouble in the fifth and that proved to be the difference in the game. The lefty allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out seven over five innings of work and was charged with the loss.

In the bottom half of the fifth, the Bay Sox loaded the bases with nobody out but Lawlor made a snag of a sharp liner back to the mound for the first out of the inning. Nick Sciortino (Boston College) followed that up with a sac fly to right field that plated Brad Johnson (West Virginia) with the only run of the night for either team.

Keene had their chances throughout, but left nine men on base and ultimately came up short against Bay Sox pitching.

Brandon Cook (Broward) fired seven shutout innings for New Bedford, allowing six hits and fanning five while walking just one. Cook got the win and Dan Wertz (Sacred Heart) pitched the ninth for his first save of the year.

The first two batters of the game reached for the Swamp Bats and that was perhaps their best scoring chance of the night with runners at first and second and nobody out. However, Cook got a pair of flyouts and struck out Aubrey McCarty to escape the jam.

Keene would find themselves threatening again in the top half of the seventh as back-to-back singles by Taylor Perez (St. Leo) and Dominic Severino (Central Conn State) put runners at first and second with one out. Patrick McGrath (Washington State) followed with a hard hit ball to third, but it was snagged by Johnson, who touched the bag for one out and fired across the diamond to get McGrath to complete the 5-3 inning-ending double play.

The Swamp Bats attempted to get a two-out rally going in the eighth and loaded the bases against Bay Sox reliever Jimmy Davitt (Bryant) but McCarty popped up to the shortstop David Mackinnon (Hartford) and Davitt wiggled his way out of the jam.

Severino led the way offensively for Keene, going 2-4 with a pair of singles.

After a day off tomorrow, the Swamp Bats will travel to Vermont on Tuesday to battle the Mountaineers at 6:30 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field.
