Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The Nashville Sounds scored early and often, handing the Louisville Bats a 7-4 loss in the finale of their six-game series on Sunday afternoon at Louisville Slugger Field.
On just the second pitch of the game, Tyler Black connected for a leadoff home run to right, putting the Sounds ahead against Bats righty Christian Roa (L, 0-1). A throwing error by catcher Michael Trautwein would give the Sounds a second run in the opening frame. An inning later, Nashville expanded the lead on a two-run double from Francisco Mejia, who later came home with the fifth run of the game on an error. Black's second home run of the day increased the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth.
Roa pitched four innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Louisville began to chip away in the bottom of the fifth. Nashville starter Carlos Rodriguez issued three consecutive walks to begin the inning. An RBI fielder's choice from Hernan Perez and an RBI ground out from Blake Dunn got the Bats on the board at 6-2.
The Bats got closer in the bottom of the sixth. P.J. Higgins got it started with a walk and Edwin Rios doubled to put two on with nobody out. Peyton Burdick drove them both home with a single to center, cutting the Sounds' lead to 6-4.
Isaac Collins put the Sounds back up three with a solo homer off Evan Kravetz to start the seventh. The Bats wouldn't get any closer. Rodriguez (W, 1-4) would earn the win after giving up four runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Harold Chirino tossed two clean innings to hold the lead. Darrell Thompson fanned a pair in the eighth. Closer Corbin Martin (S, 1) pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the win and earn the save.
Offensively, Soto was the only Bat to record more than one hit, going 2-for-4 in the loss. Burdick drove in a pair while Conner Capel and Michael Trautwein took two walks. Despite the loss, the Bats earned their first win in a six-game series this season, taking four of six over Nashville.
The Bats (13-14) begin a road trip on Tuesday afternoon against the St. Paul Saints. First pitch at CHS Field is scheduled for 12:07 p.m. Nick Curran will be on the call for 1450/96.1 WXVW.
