February 24, 2024 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- Three goals in a less than four minute span in the third period from the Eagles third line helped pace Cape Breton to a 4-1 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Saturday night.
- Charles-Antoine Lavallée scored twice and added an assist for the Eagles, while Brayden Schmitt & Lucas Romeo also scored for the Eagles in addition to adding an assist. Noah Laberge's power play marker was the lone tally for the Titan.
- Nicolas Ruccia stopped 29 of 30 in the win, while Josh Flemming stopped 27 of 31 in the loss.
Schmitt's goal was the only one in the first 40 minutes as he jumped into the play to zap a shot past Flemming and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 6:22 mark of the game. It was a quick moving first frame, with one stretch of play going 5:55 without a whistle.
Both teams failed to score on a single power play in the opening period. There was even less activity on the scoresheet in the middle stanza, with just a single Bathurst power play and no goals for either side.
The game broke open past the six minute mark of the third period, with two goals 30 seconds apart, coming from Romeo & Lavallée. Romeo's goal came after he finished the pass from behind the net, and Lavallée redirected a point shot by Schmitt to add to the lead. Lavallée's second snipe of the night came from the right faceoff circle, giving the Eagles a 4-0 edge.
Laberge's goal came 40 seconds into the Titan power play, a shot from the blueline to break Ruccia's shutout bid. In the final two minutes of the game, Bathurst coach Gordie Dwyer lifted his goaltender in an attempt to pull the score closer but the Titan were unable to convert with the extra man, and the game finished 4-1.
The rematch between these two teams goes tomorrow afternoon at the Nest! It's Family Day at the Nest- with the purchase of an adult ticket, a youth ticket can be purchased for $5.
