Eagles Top Sea Dogs on Heritage Night

February 25, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

It took exactly halfway through the first period for the game to find its first goal when Roy pushed the puck through the legs of Shingarov at the side of the net to put the home side in front. It was Roy's first goal as an Eagle. The Eagles also had the only power play time of the opening period, but were unable to score on a 70 second five on three advantage after Pavel Simek put the puck over the boards with his team shorthanded.

Saint John was able to tie the game in the middle stanza off of a fortunate bounce, as Pavel Simek stickhandled the puck and it bounced off Conor Shortall and by Satny to the game. Later in the period, the Sea Dogs found themselves on their own five on three power play- for a total of 1:41- but couldn't find the back of the net.

While neither team was able to score on the power play, penalties would factor into the Thurston go ahead goal. Saint John's Peter Reynolds was given a two-minute minor for boarding, and Cape Breton's Conor Shortall rushed to the scene and earned a roughing minor. With the teams playing four on four with open ice, Thurston found space in front of the net and converted a cross-ice pass to put the Eagles in the driver's seat.

With 1:42 remaining, the Sea Dogs lifted Shingarov for an extra attacker. Saint John created some initial pressure but with over a minute remaining Squires found the open goal on the right wing and clinched a victory for the home side.

The same two teams will battle in another pivotal game for playoff positioning tomorrow at Centre 200 at 3PM. Tickets can be purchased at https://bit.ly/3ZqUY1P They are also available for purchase in person at the Centre 200 box office and by the phone during box office hours at 902-564-2200
