QMJHL Cape Breton Eagles

Eagles Top Armada 5-3 for First Home Ice Win of New Season

October 6, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

NOTES FROM THE GAME - Xavier Daigle's goal in the late in the second period stood up as the winner as the Eagles topped the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 5-3 at Centre 200. A late empty net goal from Olivier Houde was the lone marker for either team in the third period.

- It was a big night for Eagles rookies- Callum Aucoin & Émile Ricard each scored their first career goals. Aucoin added two assists while Ricard also picked up an assist.

- Zach Biggar opened the scoring for the Eagles, while Cam Squires & Thomas Bégin picked up two assists on the night.

- Matt Gosselin's shorthanded goal was the first of his QMJHL career. Thomas Paquet & Alexis Bourque scored the other Armada goals.

- Jakub Milota stopped 21 of 24 shots in the win, while Charles-Édward Gravel allowed four goals on 20 shots (in addition to the empty netter) in the loss.

- The win was the first on home ice of the season for the Eagles and Cape Breton's record climbs back to the .500 mark at 3-3 on the young season.

Biggar jumped into opening space to beat Gravel for the opening goal at 4:31, marking the first time the Eagles scored in the opening period this season. Aucoin cashed in on a rebound on a Bégin shot to add to the lead. The Eagles thought they had gone up 3-0 but a Luke Patterson goal was waived off for an offside.

Gosselin's goal concluded the scoring in the opening period, finishing a two on one with Jonathan Fauchon. In the opening minutes of the second period, the teams traded goals with Paquet and Ricard finding the back of the net, with Ricard's first marker coming on a feed from Bégin from behind the goal.

Bourque tipped a Mateo Nobert shot on the power play to tie the game for the Armada, and late in the second period the Eagles missed a chance to take a lead as the Armada killed off a penalty. (Blainville-Boisbriand's penalty kill is a perfect 20/20 on the season). However, less than two minutes after the too many men penalty was killed, and in the final minute of the period, Daigle flipped a shot from the blueline by Gravel and the Eagles took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Blainville-Boisbriand pushed in the third period, outshooting the Eagles 12-5, but Milota stood tall and Houde's empty netter sealed the deal for the Eagles.

The Eagles are in action on home ice again on Sunday at 3 PM as it's Bearcat night at the Nest. The Eagles will be honouring the late Blair Joseph, former assistant coach, with a ceremony before the game featuring multiple guest speakers. The opponent is the Victoriaville Tigres, and it's the only visit they'll make to Centre 200 all season.
