Eagles Take Command in Round One with 5-2 Win Over Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- Ed McGrane had a hat trick as the Colorado Eagles defeated the Youngstown SteelHounds Wednesday night 5-2 at the Chevrolet Centre. The Eagles now lead the best-of-seven series three games to zero. Eagles goaltender Marco Emond saved 28 of 30 shots for his second post-season win and Ryan Tobler added three assists as the Eagles look to clinch the series on Friday night in Youngstown. The difference of the series to this point has been the final two periods in which Colorado is outscoring the SteelHounds 16-4. Listen to all of the Eagles action live on 107.9 The Bear.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game for the first time in the series when Craig Strain took a pass from Ryan Tobler and beat SteelHounds' goaltender David Currie. It was a power play goal at the 9:52 mark of the period. Youngstown answered only three minutes later on a goal by amateur Rob Sirianni. He was assisted by Jeff Christian and Mark Odut. The teams remained tied at one for the remainder of the period, and it was the SteelHounds that held the shot advantage at 9-6.

The teams skated back-and-forth for a majority of the period. Eagles' goaltender Marco Emond made a number of key saves to keep the score tied. Finally, at the 16:39 mark of the period, Ed McGrane unlocked the tie on a shorthanded breakaway as he beat Currie with the forehand. The Eagles held the 2-1 lead for the rest of the period although they were outshot again 9-8. Colorado has outscored the SteelHounds 7-1 in the second period through three games of the series.

The SteelHounds tied the game early in the final period on a goal by Shaun Landolt. The goal came just 1:45 into the period and Kelly Sickavish and Tab Lardner assisted on the play. The Eagles regained their lead when Brent Hughes capitalized on a Ryan Tobler pass taking a 3-2 advantage. Tobler earned his third assist of the game when he fed Ed McGrane at the 11:43 mark of the period giving the Eagles a 4-2 lead. The SteelHounds pulled their goaltender late in the contest and it was McGrane that iced the game for his third goal when he put the puck in the empty net from 200 feet away. The Eagles were again outshot by the SteelHounds in the period, but they capitalized on their chances and earned the victory. Final Score: Eagles 5 - SteelHounds 2.
