The Arizona Sundogs came out an inspired hockey team in their first ever home playoff game and never looked back. Five different Sundogs found the back of the net as the Dogs beat the Corpus Christi 5-1 Wednesday Night and took a 2-1 lead in the Southern Conference Quarterfinal best-of-seven series. The Rayz will look to even up the series on Friday Night when the teams meet again in Game Four from Prescott Valley. Rayz playoff tickets are currently on sale, starting as low as $10. The opening stanza was controlled by the Sundogs are their second ranked playoff power-play unit. For the third time in as many games this series the Sundogs grabbed the game's first goal when Brent Kelly scored a power play tally at 7:34 after a skilled rush into the zone from Chris Greene. Minutes later at 11:15 Karl Sellan, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, scored another power play goal to give the Dogs a 2-0 lead. Arizona capped the first period scoring when Cory Stillman tallied in the final minute of the frame at 19:19. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 15-4 in the first period.
Neither team tallied in the second period and the Sundogs retained their 3-0 advantage. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 14-6 in the second period.
Arizona added to their advantage in the third period with two quick goals. Daniel Laperriere scored his second of the playoffs from the high slot at 5:51 to give Arizona the 4-0 lead. Just 29 seconds later, Arizona made it 5-0 when Dmitri Leonov tallied at 6:20. The Rayz got on the board and spoiled Mike Wall's shutout bid at 13:10. Kevin Watters took an outlet feed and moved in to deke out Wall and cap the scoring.
Vogel fell to 1-2 on the playoffs saddled with the loss. He made 35 saves on 40 shots. Wall earned the win, making 23 saves on 24 shots and improved to 2-1. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 40-24. Corpus Christi went 0-4 on the power play and Arizona went 2-6.
Corpus Christi will remain in Arizona for Games Four and Five on Friday and Saturday Night at 9:00pm Central Time. If necessary, the Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Tuesday, April 10th at 7:05pm. Tickets are on sale now and start at just $10.
