April 4, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ AMARILLO, Tex. ]-In an offensive battle the Scorpions prevailed with a 6-4 victory in Amarillo. The win gave the Scorpions a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven series.
The first period was an active one. The teams combined for five goals and ten power plays.
The Scorpions got out of the gate fast and furious. Lance Herauf picked up his first career playoff goal at the 1:48 mark. The Scorpions gained a five-on-three advantage and made the Gorillas pay. Aaron MacInnis powered a slap shot from the blue line and into the net. With the Scorpions back on the power play Konrad Reeder lifted the puck over goalie Shawn Conschafter's shoulder and into the net. That would be the last shot Conschafter would face as he was pulled in favor of Jamie Vandespyker.
With the Scorpions up 3-0 in the middle of the first period, Amarillo decided to wake up. Bill Vandermeer tipped in a power play goal giving the home fans their first thing to cheer about on the evening. Chris Lipsett cut the lead to one with a power play goal of his own at the 16:12 mark.
The second period was nearly identical to the first. Five goals scored and eight power plays in total. The Scorpions scored twice in the first 65-seconds of the middle frame.
Mike Prpich worked the puck towards the net, but was stopped by Vandespyker. Jeremy Garrison was on top of the crease and stuffed the rebound home for his second goal of the playoffs. Chris Robertson gave the Scorpions back their three-goal lead as he tipped in a Rob Guinn shot from the point.
Like the opening period, the Gorillas roared back. Lipsett picked up his second power play goal of the night at the 4:20 mark. Jason Chafe picked up a rebound goal at the 13:45 mark of the second period bringing Amarillo to within one.
The Scorpions responded just over a minute later. Craig Macdonald raced into the zone and cut towards the net. As he was getting ready to shoot he was taken down to the ice by Trevor Socholotuk, but Macdonald was able to get a shot through the goalie's legs and into the net.
The third period proved to be a little different than the first period. Very few penalties called and neither team scored. The Scorpions had no problems with that set-up as they gained the win and took back home-ice advantage.
The teams get right back to playoff hockey Thursday night in Amarillo. Saturday the teams will return to the ice for game five in Amarillo. Both games drop the puck at 6:05 p.m. Mountain Time and can be heard on 1050 KTBL.
The series returns to New Mexico on Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10, if necessary. Tickets are on sale now for exciting Scorpions playoff hockey.
