Eagles Take 2-0 Series Lead in 7-4 Victory over Youngstown

LOVELAND, Colo.- The Colorado Eagles put up seven goals for the second consecutive night in a 7-4 win over the Youngstown SteelHounds Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center. Seth Leonard, Greg Pankewicz and Aaron Schneekloth all had two goals for Colorado as they took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Paulo Colaiacovo started in net for the Eagles and saved 26 of 30 shots in the win. Four different players scored for the SteelHounds who head home to host games three, four and five (if necessary). The Eagles are now 13-4 all-time at the Budweiser Events Center in the playoffs. Game three is Wednesday night at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. The game will begin at 5:05 p.m. MDT and can be heard on 107.9 The Bear.

The SteelHounds again jumped out and scored the first goal. Tab Lardner earned his first goal of the post-season on a shot that Eagles' goaltender Paulo Colaiacovo never saw. It was a power play goal for Youngstown, their second power play goal of the series. Colorado earned a five-on-three power play three minutes later, but were unable to convert. That marked their third five-on-three power play in the last two games against Youngstown, but they have not been able to capitalize on their chances. The SteelHounds held on to the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period while outshooting Colorado 9-7.

The Eagles tied the game at the 6:09 mark of the second period on a power play goal by Greg Pankewicz. He took a pass from across the crease from Ed McGrane and jammed the puck into the open net. Just over one minute later, Seth Leonard took a centering pass from Riley Nelson and gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead for his first career playoff goal. Jeff Christian tied the game at two when he banged in a bouncing puck in front of Colaiacovo. At the 14:55 mark of the period, Seth Leonard managed to grab a rebound and move around a sprawling David Currie for the Eagles third goal. Colorado capped their four-goal second period on a great individual effort by Aaron Schneekloth. He drove the net from the right wing, got around his defender and muscled the puck into the net to give Colorado a 4-2 lead. The Eagles took the lead into the intermission, and they have outscored the SteelHounds 6-1 in the second period in the two games.

Shaun Landolt made it a one-goal game less than one minute into the third period on his first goal of the playoffs. That would be as close as they would get as the Eagles reeled off three consecutive goals to take a 7-3 lead. Greg Pankewicz scored his second of the game at the 5:10 mark, Scott Polaski scored his first of the playoffs at the 7:39 mark, and Aaron Schneekloth scored his second of the game at the 11:29 mark. Matt Hanson added a late power play goal for the SteelHounds to make it a three-goal game. Final score: Eagles 7 - SteelHounds 4.
