Eagles Shut Out Sea Dogs On Chris Culligan Night At The Nest
November 5, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
On the night Chris Culligan's #7 went up to the rafters, the Cape Breton Eagles shut out the Saint John Sea Dogs. Oliver Satny stopped all 24 Sea Dogs shots in a 4-0 Eagles victory.
Following a ceremony raising the #7 banner, featuring speeches from former Eagles assistant coach and current assistant general manager John Hanna and Culligan himself, the Eagles and Sea Dogs skated to a scoreless first period. Fittingly, after the opening frame, the shots were locked at 7. Both teams had special teams opportunities- however, both teams effectively killed their own power play by taking their own minor penalty.
Saint John again killed their own power play in the early portion of the second period, and there was finally a breakthrough when Eagles captain Jérémy Langlois flipped a shot through traffic with the teams playing four on four, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs would finally see one of their power plays to its end- a five-minute major to Eagles forward Cameron Henderson for checking from behind. However, the home side killed it off. Henderson wasn't the only player in the period to "earn" a misconduct, as former Eagle Connor Trenholm was given a ten-minute misconduct after taking off Conor Shortall's helmet.
The Eagles were able to find success on their own power plays- Charles Boutin found the back of the net on the first half of a double minor to Jacob Beaulieu for spearing. Saint John killed off the second part of the double minor, but Samuel Johnson would score on a later power play and the Eagles held a 3-0 edge at the end of the middle frame.
Period three saw more goal scoring and misconducts- more the latter as Saint John's Vincent Despont was sent off for ten before the halfway mark of the frame. The Eagles added to the goal tally on a snapshot from Jordan Côté, and in the final minutes Langlois & Pavel Simek were given ten minute misdconducts.
Santy stopped all 24 shots in the shutout, while Olivier Brideau turned aside 35 of 39 in the loss for Saint John.
The Eagles finish their three-game home stand on Tuesday night when they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. This is a game that was rescheduled following Hurricane Fiona- season ticket holders are asked to use home game ticket #2. Additional tickets can be purchased at https://bit.ly/3FMVd0p.
