Cape Breton Eagles News Release

HALIFAX- After a hard fought 5-3 win on Friday in Sydney, the Eagles ramped things up Saturday in Halifax and routed the Mooseheads 8-2 to sweep the weekend series.

While the Mooseheads carried the early part of the action, the Eagles weathered the storm and were the first to the scoresheet. It came on the first power play goal of the weekend for either team as Egor Sokolov finished a one timer from Ryan Francis to put the visitors up 1-0.

Halifax would have their special teams chances as well, including a 4 on 3 that lasted more than 90 seconds, but the Eagles kept them at bay and would be rewarded late in the period. Francis came off the left wing and slipped a backhand deke through Alexis Gravel to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 to finish the opening frame.

The Eagles carried the first half of the second period as well, chasing Alexis Gravel from the Halifax net. His night came to an end after Sokolov came up the wing and beat him with a backhand shot. Cole McLaren came into the Halifax goal and made a few stops but was beaten when Shawn Boudrias ripped home a pass from Sokolov.

The Mooseheads showed push back in the later stages of the second period. It started with a successful penalty kill, and then at the end of the penalty Jordan McKenna put the puck by Kevin Mandolese for his first career goal, getting the home side on the board short handed. 61 seconds later, it was the power play as Raphaël Lavoie cut the lead to 4-2.

However the momentum would swing the way of the Eagles before period's end, and there it would stay. A shot from Jarrett Baker from the blue line made its way through traffic with 24 seconds left and the Eagles had a 5-2 lead heading into the third period.

If there was any doubt Cape Breton had the momentum it would be cemented when less than two minutes into the final frame when Shaun Miller scored from the side of the goal. The Eagles would add two more before night's end- first Brooklyn Kalmikov, and then Matthew Lint getting his first career goal when he tipped a point shot from Kyle Havlena.

Mandolese stopped 28 of 30 shots in the win. Gravel took the loss, allowing three goals on 15 shots, and McLaren allowed five goals on 16 shots in relief.

The Eagles will head home and are next in action against the Victoriaville Tigers on Thursday night. It's the only appearance the Tigers will make at Centre 200 this season. Puck drop is at 7 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
