LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Colorado Eagles (30-21-7-4) rallied late in the third period to defeat the Las Vegas Wranglers (16-38-4-3) 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday night at Orleans Arena.
Forward Adam Hugesman put the Wranglers on the board first with a power-play goal on a 3-on-1 breakaway, 5:04 into the first frame to give Las Vegas the 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, John Armstrong picked-up a turnover in the low slot and beat Eagles netminder Marc Cheverie to extend the Wranglers lead to 2-0. Forward Luke Fulghum netted the Eagles first goal from between the hashes to cut into the Wranglers lead, 2-1, 13:37 into the first.
Just over five minutes into the second period, Hughesman stuffed home his second goal of the game to give the Wranglers the 3-1 advantage. With only 5.3 seconds left in the second period Eagles forward Jesse Mychan raced down the left side of the ice and beat Wranglers goalie Josh Watson to make it a one-goal game heading into the second intermission, 3-2.
Wranglers forward Matt Tassone threw the puck over Cheverie's shoulder from the low slot to pump Las Vegas' lead, 4-2, 3:28 into the third period. Less than three minutes later the Eagles answered with a Kyle Kraemer power play goal from the right face-off circle to put the Eagles back within one goal, 4-3. Fulghum tied the game at 4-4 with just 49 seconds left, as he deflected a pass from defenseman Kevin Young.
With the score tied at four, the Eagles and Wranglers headed into 4-on-4 sudden death overtime. The overtime saw no score and the game would be decided in a shootout. All four Wranglers shooters were denied by Cheverie while Fulghum and Eagles amateur forward Todd Fiddler both scored to give the Eagles the 5-4 victory.
The Eagles head back to the Budweiser Events Center for a three-game home stand against the Utah Grizzlies next week.
