Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers, 3-1, in the first of three games between the teams this week at the Budweiser Events Center. With the win, Colorado passed Las Vegas for 5th place in the Western Conference standings with the ECHL's Kelly Cup playoffs just weeks away.
The teams combined for just eight shots in the opening period, only one of which came in the first 10 minutes, belonging to Las Vegas. But Colorado ended up with a 5-3 edge by the time 20 minutes elapsed, the three shots against matching a season low for an Eagles opponent in a single frame.
Shots picked up in the second stanza, with the Wranglers holding a 20-15 edge. However, Colorado out-scored Las Vegas in the frame thanks to a pair of power-play goals less than a minute and a half apart.
The Wranglers got on the board first midway through the second period when Carlo Finucci chased down the puck along the right wing and beat Adam Brown with a shot from the right circle. Colorado countered four minutes later when Chad Costello -- the league's reigning MVP who returned to the Eagles after a three-month stint in the AHL -- found Collin Bowman for a goal from inside the left circle.
And less than a minute and a half later, Colorado's league-leading power play put the team up, 2-1, when Dylan Hood whacked home a second chance at a rebound from below the goal line, chipping it over Joe Fallon's right toe.
Colorado added an insurance goal at 12:44 of the final frame when Bowman netted his second score of the game with a blast from the right point off the far post. At the other end of the ice, Brown stopped another 10 shots -- several with spectacular saves -- to finish the night with 32 saves on 33 shots.
