Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME
- A four-point night from Peter Repcik helped paced the Drummondville Voltigeurs to a 5-1 win over the Eagles in Sydney on Saturday night. Maveric Lamoureux also chipped in with a goal and two assists.
- Cam Squires broke the shutout in the third period with a power play marker to make it 4-1, before recently acquired Mikael Huchette finished the scoring for the Voltigeurs.
- Riley Mercer picked up the win, stopping 34 of 35 shots. Nicolas Ruccia took the loss, stopping 25 of 30 shots.
- Drummondville defenseman Simon-Pier Brunet was given a five-minute major and game misconduct in the second period for a check to the head.
There wasn't much to choose from between the two teams after a scoreless first fifteen minutes. The Voltigeurs began to carry the play in the latter stages and found the game's opening goal from Sam Oliver. Repcik tried to break through the defense, passed the puck to the left side of the ice to Ethan Gauthier, who found Oliver in the slot to bury the opening goal- and the only one of the first period.
Brunet picked up the misconduct early in the second period- at the same sequence, Eagles captain Zach Biggar took a minor penalty. The Eagles failed to score four on four or during the three minutes of major power play time. The lone goal of the middle stanza came from Repcik, finishing a give and go with Justin Côté.
Drummondville put a stranglehold on the contest in the early portion of the third period. A Repcik shot handcuffed Ruccia in the early going, and then Maveric Lamoureux pushed the puck over the line in a goal mouth scramble before the three-minute mark.
The Eagles had an opportunity to get on the board with an extended five on three later in the frame, but couldn't beat Mercer. The breakthrough came on a later power play when Squires finished a one timer. Huchette tipped a shot in the blue paint by Ruccia to finish the scoring for the night.
Tomorrow afternoon is the final home game for the Eagles in the first half of the season, as the Eagles battle the Gatineau Olympiques! It's also Teddy Bear Toss night in collaboration with Colbourne Auto Group- fans are asked to bring a brand-new stuffed animal to the game wrapped in a plastic bag, to throw on the ice after the first Eagles goal.
It's the only visit the Olympiques, featuring former Eagle Charles Boutin, will make to Centre 200 this year. It's also Family Day at the Nest- fans can purchase a $5 youth ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.
Puck drop is at 3 PM. Tickets can be purchased at https://shorturl.at/imrEU They are also available for purchase in person at the Centre 200 box office and by the phone during box office hours at 902-564-2200
