Eagles Fall to Titan in Opening Game of Road Trip
December 11, 2019 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
BATHURST- The Cape Breton Eagles were on the wrong end of a 5-1 decision to begin their three game Maritime road trip.
The Eagles carried the early part of the play, including a three on 0 man rush that they weren't able to capitalize on. Bathurst was able to weather the early storm and took control in the opening period.
Bennett MacArthur, called up from the MHL's Summerside Capitals, would get things started for the Titan when he lifted a shot over Kevin Mandolese for his first career goal. The Eagles had a prime opportunity to tie the game, earning the first power play of the night and swarmed the net with several chances at penalty's end. However the Titan cleared the zone, Anderson MacDonald passed off the boards to Shawn Element who broke in to beat Mandolese to make it a 2-0 game.
There would be just one goal in the middle stanza, and it went to the road team. The Eagles halved the lead when Brooklyn Kalmikov shot through a screen and it was 2-1 going into the final frame.
It was an unusual start to the third period as the two sides played the first six minutes and eleven seconds without a single whistle. Unfortunately for the Eagles the first break in the action came after a Titan goal- Rémy Anglehart getting a piece of a Cole Huckins shot to push the lead to 3-1. Later in the period, Anglehart found himself at the side of the goal alone and pushed another one over the line to make it 4-1.
With under five minutes to play in the period, the Eagles went to the power play. Unable to score in the first half of the two minute minor, coach Jake Grimes elected to lift Mandolese as the club put six forwards out. There were chances but they were still unable to solve Tristan Bérubé. With the penalty over and the net still empty, Element fired it into the open cage and the score finished at 5-1.
The Eagles will continue their Maritime swing on Friday night in Moncton against the Wildcats. Puck drop is at 7 PM and you can hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
