Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY- It wasn't the ending that the Screaming Eagles were looking for to a four game home stand as the Saint John Sea Dogs posted a 7-0 victory on Saturday.
Saint John entered the contest with the league's top power play and penalty kill and both special units were on display in spades. The Sea Dogs denied the Screaming Eagles on seven power play attempts, while the Saint John power play connected three times, including for the game's opening goal. Joe Veleno snuck behind the Cape Breton defense to slide it under Kevin Mandolese and give Saint John a 1-0 advantage. Later in the opening frame the Dogs would earn a five on three advantage and some quick fluid puck movement saw the puck land on Jakub Zboril's stick and then in the back of the net.
It was 2-0 heading into the middle stanza and the visitors would add to their lead with the first even strength goal of the contest as Simon Bourque wired the puck through traffic from the blueline. In spite of that being the only goal of the period, the second frame took a lengthy period of time to complete thanks to an extensive delay. The stoppage was caused when Saint John's Chase Stewart, attempting to line up Cape Breton's Kyle McGrath for a check, barrelled through the glass. Stewart did not miss any playing time and the play resumed after the broken glass was cleaned up.
When the third period began Saint John wasted no time indicating they'd be keeping their foot on the gas as a power play marker pushed the advantage to 4-0. Julien Gauthier was parked at the side of the Screaming Eagles goal and lowered his stick to tip home the fourth goal just 81 seconds into the action.
Mathieu Joseph would then take over the game for the visitors, scoring twice with the goals coming over seven minutes apart. In a weekend that saw 17 goals scored at Centre 200 over two games, Joseph was the only player to hit the back of the net twice. Samuel Dove McFalls would finish the day's scoring on a three way passing play at the 12:18 mark of the final twenty minutes.
Callum Booth picked up the shutout in goal for Saint John, turning aside all 17 Cape Breton shots. Mandolese allowed all seven Saint John goals on 33 shots.
Saturday's game marked the QMJHL debut of Cape Breton defenseman Ryan MacLellan. The 16 year old blueliner was chosen by the Eagles in the fourth round of last year's QMJHL draft and appeared in the lineup due to the injuries to defensemen Olivier LeBlanc and Marcus Tesink. MacLellan was -1 on the day, registering one shot and took a hooking penalty in the first period.
Cape Breton now heads on the road for their longest trip of the season, a stretch of six games in nine days in the province of Québec. The trek begins Friday night in Sherbrooke. Puck drop is at 8 PM Atlantic time. You can hear all the action on 1270 AM CJCB or online at http://www.cjcbradio.com
